Star Wars Legion – A Battle Amongst the Trees – A Battle Report

Our friend who has all the amazing Star Wars terrain was unavailable this week, but fortunately I have just enough terrain to put together a board! My friends added a little bit of the stores unpainted terrain to add some more cover but I guess I’ll forgive them for that! Once again we saw the Galactic Republic fight the Separatists. In this game the mission was to capture the objectives laid across the center of the table (represented by the blip tokens.) The middle objective was worth 2 points a turn and the other two objectives were worth one point a turn. Players could also destroy the blip tokens for a set number of Victory Points depending on the turn they were destroyed by using an action to pick up a bomb and another action to place the bomb and destroy the objective. The bombs were represented by the Blood Bowl dice you’ll see on the table. The scenario also had a funky set up with each side allowed to deploy on the corners of the table 1 stick up and 3 sticks over on each of their flanks. This meant the middle ground was no easily deployed in.

Note: The BARC without the RPS-6 Rocket Launcher does not have a side car this game so it will be moving faster and shooting with less dice than you would think! I will refer to it as the “fast BARC” during this battle report.

All of the exciting action occurred on the Republics left flank. The fast BARC moved on the table and was immediately met by the Spider Droid which opened fire causing two wounds. The green unit of Clones opened fire with their RPS-6 Rocket launcher and put a wound on the heavily armored droid and the RPS-6 armed BARC came onto the board and put three wounds on the Spider. It was still early but that Droid was tottering already!

At the end of Turn 1 both factions were moving up. This is the view from the Republics left flank…

and this is from the right.

Once again the majority of the action occurred on this flank when the heavy BARC finished off the Spider Droid, only to take three wounds in return!

The commando droids fell back behind the large building to prevent themselves from being targets by the fast BARC.

Unable to acquire a target the fast BARC moved up to add it’s weight to holding the objective by the large building.

Always thinking of the big picture Rex snagged a bomb with the intent of taking it to the central objective in the center of the woods at the center of the table. On the right flank the one squad of clones took some fire and took cover to stall the overwhelming onslaught of enemy troops. General Grevious headed towards the troops in the center of the table. At the end of turn the score was 3-1 Galactic Republic.

At the start of turn three the Republic Commanders opted to go with the Green Clones in the center of the board. They opened fire on General Grevious and put two wounds on the fiend! The troops in the center of the board just had to hope General Grevious wouldn’t be able to make it into combat this turn!

General Grevious had just enough movement to make it into the Wookies with his charge and with his Initiative card he was able to hurl about his light sabers. At the end of his attack sequence two Wookies and 2 clones lay dead on the forest floor!

The red Clone Troopers opened fire on the B2’s lurking in the back woods and caused four wounds, killing two of the clankers!

Padame lined up a shot and put a wound on the Magna Guard.

The BX Commandos charged the fast BARC and made quick work of it in close combat destroying it outright!

The Green clones near the bunker realized it was suddenly much safer with the majority of the droids on their flank moving towards the center of the board so they confidently moved around the bunker and opened fire on the Magna Droids. With the help of their trust Z6 they put 3 wounds on the Magna Guard, which due to the loss of a wound from Padame caused two of the elite droids to go down! Now that’s a crossfire!

The Droidikas opened fire on the clones but in part due to their heavy cover they only lost 1 member but they took two suppression markers! The Magna Guard were able to put another wound on the unit adding another two suppression markers! That unit might end up regretting their bravery!

The B1 horde advanced on the objective and opened fire on Padame who was able to avoid the worst of the shooting with her dodges, but still took 1 wound.

The heavy BARC had moved up to try and take the objective marker but the B2’s had other ideas shooting it from the sky!

Meanwhile the blue unit of Clones was able to finish off the Magna Guard which died ingloriously in the center of the field away from their master, General Grevious, and were thus unable to save him from the fury of the surviving Wookies which put a wound on him! At the end of Turn 3 the Republic was able to build on their lead moving to 5-2.

At the start of turn 4 the BX commandos charged the Red Clones on the objective and killed two of them.

Willing to sacrifice themselves for the Republic the Green clones by the bunker moved up to contest the objective by the bunker, if they lived, and shooting from the hip took down 1 B1.

The B1’s swarmed the Clone Troopers figuring if they couldn’t kill them in melee at least they wouldn’t be getting shot by the Z6 next turn! They failed to kill even a single clone but at least they wouldn’t be shot to death next turn!

Deep in the woods Commander Rex took a wound from the Droidikas which were throwing fire at the hero to stop him from setting the bomb.

The unit of Green Clones moved up to help take control of an objective and killed a two of the BX droids.

Meanwhile around the table the two clones stuck in combat with the B1 swarm took down one of their attackers and the Snipers hit Rex in the woods causing a wound and panicking him. Rex failed to roll off a single Suppression (he had four!) and was thus unable to plant the bomb! To add insult to injury (or injury to insult I’d guess) the B2’s in the woods put another wound on Rex! At the end of Turn 4 the score was 9-2 in favor of the Republic.

With that we had about 30 minutes until the store closed up. While we probably could have finished the final turn we decided the game was clearly going to be a Republic win and we should stay on the shops good side by not making them wait for us to clean up! Looking at the board the left objective and the center objective would probably have stayed in the hands of the Republic while the right objective could have fallen to the Separatists leading to a 12-3 victory, possibly more if Rex could survive long enough to plant the bomb!

We are really beginning to get the hang of this game, which in my group means we will probably start to play something else soon, but we are all having fun!
