My group has been getting more and more games of Star Wars Legion in, and the group is growing which is always good to see! In this game we had two players with the Galactic Empire fighting myself and a friend with our Galactic Republic. This would also be the first time I’ve ever played a “non-historical” game of Legion before! Let’s get into it and see how we fared!
Edit: After posting pictures of the last game on social media many people commented we needed more terrain. I am still working on getting more terrain, but we played this game before everyone said I needed more terrain. I’ll listen for next game I provide the terrain for!
Our Battle Plan was Contact, Contact! Starting on Turn 2 each player would gain 1 VP for each objective they controlled in allied or contested territory and 2 VP’s if they controlled the objective in the enemies territory. The objective marker near the AT-ST was in the Empire’s territory, while the objective behind the large central forest (second picture) was in the Republics territory. For our secondary objective we had Destroy Enemy Base. The enemy bases were the ruined columns near the AT-ST in the first picture, and the 40k terrain piece in the 3rd. Each player gave one unit a bomb (The AT-ST for the Empire and the large unit of clones for the Republic.) If this unit controlled the enemy base they would blow it up for 4 VP’s! My buddy was a little haphazard with the placement of the bases, I was reading the card when I started to write this report and realized they should have been within 1 of the table edge. Would this make a difference? Read on and find out!
Let’s get into the game! In my first activation of the game I foolishly pushed my Wookies right into the middle of the board. This would put them in easy range of the AT-ST. I wanted to jump on top of the objective as soon as possible, but forgot it didn’t go live until Turn 2. Oops! Fortunately what I lacked in smarts I made up for in luck as the Wookies were only in range of one of the AT-ST’s guns so they only took 1 wound. Less fortunately Iden Versio came on the table and took aim at the Wookies causing two wounds, killing one of them.

The left flank from my viewpoint. The large trooper unit and the ARC troopers learned from the Wookies mistake and stayed behind the central forest, the Wookies started to try and take the flank and the Empire troops hugged the cover.

On the right Flank Commander Rex moved towards one of the objectives with a squad of clones just behind him while a unit of Stormtroopers and their Occupier tank moved up to attack the objective in a later turn!

In turn 2 Iden Version attempted to take out the Wookies and looked like she was going to do so putting 5 hits on the arboreal creatures, but they managed to dodge 1 and save the other four hits! A pair of speeders opened fire on the Wookie Chieftain who was confidentially standing in the open…

but it turns out he had some right to be confident as with four hits he took down one of the speeders that shot at him!

My buddy is a big fan of getting units on top of bunkers and seeing the opportunity he had his Wookies scale the bunker and open fire on the rear unit of speeders. Somehow the whole unit was less efficent than the Cheiftan alone only putting 2 W on the follow on wave of speeders.

The clones moved into the woods to claim the objective and while they took fire from the Occupier they didn’t take any wounds!

The mega unit of Clones opened fire on the Stormtroopers in the central woods that were holding their objective killing three of them!

I was a little wishy washy with Rex moving him from supporting the flank to moving up to support the big blob. Padame defended the base in an attempt to prevent the AT-ST from being able to just walk over and blow it up.

The view of the left flank of the battlefield at the end of turn 2.

End of turn 2: 3VP’s Empire to 2 VP’s Republic.
The Wookie Chieftan started the turn by charging the wounded Speeder tearing it apart! In a small matter of revenge Iden Versio put a single wound on the indecisive Rex as he ran across the open space on the board!

The large unit of Clones killed off the remaining Storm Troopers and the Imperial Officer that were guarding the objective in the Empires deployment zone.

The Wookies bravely moved up to contest the objective the AT-ST was on and took four wounds for their heroism!

The ARC troopers stared down the approaching Speeder bikes…

and opted to charge in and engage it in melee rather than shooting it! Their impetuousness allowed them to destroy it in close combat!

Rex was clearly feeling spicy because he ran up to help take control of the objective and while doing so managed to put a wound on the lurking AT-ST! Only 10 to go….

At the end of turn 3 the lead shifted to the Republic, seeing them go up 4-3. This was going to be a tight game!

At the start of Turn 4 the Occupier moved up to contest the objective on the Republics right flank, but took two wounds from the defending clones while doing so!

The speeder engaged with the ARC troopers struck one dead and then flew out of combat in an attempt to escape the elite troopers attentions!

Rex continued to take shots a Iden Versio put w wound on him and the Occupier tank opened fire putting on another two, dropping the brave commander down to only 1 wound!

With the large blob of Clone Troopers moving up to take possession of the central objective Rex and Chewie fell back behind the woods to ensure they survived to take another turn! The AT-ST opened fire on the Clone Troopers in the woods and put six hits on the unit, but five of them survived thanks to their red cube saves!

The Arc troopers weren’t about to let the lone Speeder get away so once again they raced across the field to engage their foe in melee, and they were able to bring the flyer down, destroying it utterly!

At the end of Turn 4 the score was all even at 5-5. The last turn would determine it all!
In the first shot of Turn 5 the Occupier opened up on Rex and finally took him down! That’s one less unit to contest that central ojective!

The Stormtroopers defending their base opened fire on Padame who moved up to control the central objective and put three wounds on her!

The Stormtroopers in the woods moved up to put another wound on the Republic Senator…

and leaving nothing to chance the AT-ST focused it’s fire on Padame finishing her off! Meanwhile Iden was able to finish off Chewie who just moved up to try to wrest control of the objective from the AT-ST, but it wasn’t to be!

The battlefield on the right flank on the final stages of the last turn. The Occupier and the clones took shots at each other but were unable to cause any damage.

The large group of Clone Troopers took their revenge on Iden for her rampage and gunned her down! On the other side of the board the Wookie chieftain continued his charge across the battlefield and secure the objective in the Empires deployment zone bringing the game to a close.

With the Chieftans marathon run across the board the Galactic Republic tipped the scale winning 7-6! It was a very close game to be sure!
The night of the game we discussed that the Republic didn’t have much they could use to stop the AT-ST, and we were lucky it didn’t march over to our base and just blow it up. Although, in retrospect that might not have been as easy said as done as it would have been on it’s own for most of it’s assault and would have had a difficult time actually controlling the objective, let alone fighting off multiple units, some of which would have ended up with rear shots. I think the Empire would have been better off if they advanced the Stormtroopers on the Republics right flank along with the Occupier to try and take out the unit of clones defending the objective this would have given them at least an 1-3 points depending on when they launched their assault.
On the Republic side I already mentioned I pushed the Wookies up too soon, had they waited until turn 2 to enter the woods they would have survived the game and allowed the Republic to take the central objective. Additionally, I was very whishy washy with Rex, and to a lesser extend the large clone unit in the center of the table. Rex was never able to get into range to use his ability to shoot at two targets, but that just speaks of the need for more terrain!
The last turn shows the importance of playing it out. Looking at the board at the start of turn 5 it looked like the Republic was going to have the game in the bag handily. We had enough small units left in the center to take the central objective and it was obvious nothing was in position to stop the Chieftan from taking the objective he was running towards. We ended up having a very poor run of drawing the wrong order token at the wrong time forcing us to move low wound troops up to the central objective earlier than we wanted to allowing them to get gunned down piecemeal. While the Republic did end up winning it was way closer than we thought. We often say in my group “that’s why you roll the dice” and in this game we can also add “that’s why you draw the order tokens!”
