Down to the wire to finish another challenge. I had some bonus models I flirted with but couldn’t finish during the 6 months so they will have to wait until next time. After seven challenges I have learned that 22 space marines in 6 months seems to be my magic number. It may not seem like a lot, especially compared to many of my prolific colleagues, but over the course of the last six years that pace has given me 4 fully painted armies which is more than I’ve ever had at any other point in my gaming life. In addition to having tons of gorgeous models to choose from when I play a game, having 4 separate armies makes it easy to welcome newcomers who want to try a game and don’t have their own army to use. A very handy situation to be in when you are trying to get people to play a 30 year old dead game. This month’s close assault Terminators will bring me some powerful melee force on the battlefield but at the cost of many points to teleport them to where they are needed most. I can’t wait to get this new (for me) faction onto the battlefield and wreak havoc in the charge phase. Thanks to Dr The Viking, Wachtmeister, and Pygmyhippo and hopefully I will see everyone again in the future for a new challenge!
Wachtmeister: Once again Jon has finished the challenge with a strong looking army. The blue power weapons look striking against the red armor of his Blood Angels! I think my favorite figure in this army is his Devastator Sergeant that has been reassigned to a veteran squad replete with stylized flames on his armor. As always I can’t wait to have our traditional end of challenge battle, although I think we may be a challenge behind already….

Nothing this month; just some scenery.
This month, I was very busy with work, but fortunately I had already completed the figures for the army challenge. I did create a piece of terrain, just because I had meant to earlier and not got around to it.
One thing I did do this month was play a game with these models. I went down to my local club to play some 40k with my friend Dave. At the moment, Dave and some other members of the club are getting into 40k 3rd edition, and that’s what we played, but I got to put the toys on the table – and they even won their game! They died like dogs but they still managed to drown the enemy in bodies, which is sort of how they’re intended to work, insofar as there’s any kind of tactical sense in this nonsense army. I added kill markings on the tank and the lascannon housing to reflect their destruction of some big targets, and I plan to continue.
And that brings the army to a close. It’s been a bit of a ridiculous project, but I am pretty happy with it. I am definitely not the painting equal of some of my fellow challenge painters, but all together I think it looks pretty good. Will I do it next year? I don’t know! Honestly I think it’s been a bit more difficult than I anticipated, although that might be because I picked one of the highest model-count armies in the game.
Wachtmeister: I’m not sure what “just some scenery” means, especially when the scenery looks this good! Some months we paint more, some less, but James hit the goal of putting together a terrific looking army and that’s what matters! The beastman hero with his leopard spot shoulder pad is one of my top favorite models in this army, but the real winner to me is the lascannon team that got a new gun shield crafted from cereal packet! I’m thrilled this army already got a win in the field, even if it wasn’t (as we call it in my group) The Lord’s Edition!

It’s the final countdoooooooooooooooooown! Duh nuh nuh nuuuuh, duh ner ner ner nuuuuuuuuh!
Yeah, so last month was ridiculous outside of painting time, so nothing happened and I had to use my first mulligan <EVER>… and I made up for it in the final month instead.
I think I went overboard in this month, and there were questions about disappearing and reappearing Bingo goals, but we all got there in the end.
Firstly, let me thank the good Dr and his beautiful assistant the WachtMeister for running it, and some other folks for making everything pretty. Even when you’re not painting or feeling it, the little chat groups we have set up are a really good motivator and way to relieve stress. The challenge gave me an excuse to knock out almost all of my models put aside for the Red Corsairs (5 infantry left, and then some extra wheels) so dead chuffed with that. I’ll have to go back and give some of the individual looking characters special sheets too, like the former Chaplain and the Apothecary (who will probably get Fabulous Billy’s mechanical knives attached) AND I need to redo the banner properly – otherwise, all done!
I reckon I’ve got about 190pts of Bingo Goals this month, sadly missing out on the “Play and old Scenario” goal as I both didn’t find time and didn’t see one that was Red Corsairs specific – almost tried to recreate the boarding of the Space Wolf cruiser, which would have been cool. Points painted, I’ve done over 2,000pts this month, which brings my total up nicely to 3,149pts (did the maths for you), bringing it in line with my usual output by the end.
The Daemon Prince was a nod to Dr The Viking’s awesome Blood Skulls, using his colour scheme which is pretty much an inverted Red Corsairs and so fits in nicely. The name M’Deph’deng Baobe is a stupid joke from the painting group around having initials from qualifications after your name, and we got carried away.. which then inspired me.

Wachtmeister: Wait a minute? I’m the assistant? I thought I was a main character! I guess since he called me beautiful I can’t be mad though…. I really like the nod to the Blood Skulls Chaos Marines in his Daemon Prince, perhaps in part because I used the torso of that model to make a Soul Grinder for my Nurgle Daemon army that still serves me to this day! Oh, and of course if anyone was going to sing “The Final Countdown” it was going to be Maddix!

no painted models for the pledged army this month, I had plans to paint one harlequin solitaire but I instead concentrated on a few models for another of my armies to be fielded in an upcoming event.
Wachtmeister: When your army looks this terrific you deserve a month to take on another project! Considering how vibrant these colors are I do hope Relentless Barrage gets around to painting that Solitaire, I’m sure it would just pop with color! I think my favorite part of this army are the Shining Spears. White is a notoriously difficult color to paint and these look super clean!

The final month. First I want to thank Dr Viking and Wachtmeister for running this challenge. As a newcomer I found the whole group to be very welcoming and encouraging. Without this challenge to push me, I am sure life would have gotten in the way and I would have a half completed army. So I am happy to be among the ones that helped slay the gray.
For this month I completed Eldrad Ulthran which is something I was excited to tackle since I had owned the model for 30+ years. Since it is such a detailed model, I wanted to make sure I spent the time needed to do it right. I ended up trying a bit of a space theme on the cloak and purple areas, and I am happy with how it turned out.
My final army comes out to 2,186 points!

I started this challenge with no 2nd edition models painted, and now I can easily field a 2,000 point army.
Wachtmeister: I love the space cloak on Eldrad, it really fits the sweep of the models cloak. Max really brought it this month with the detail, this is my favorite miniature he painted! This is a really nice looking army replete with goblin green bases which is always a 2nd Edition win! Speaking of wins, going from no 2nd Edition models painted to a full 2,000 point army is quite the win, and it’s what we are most happy to see here in the 2nd Edition Challenge!
The 40k 2nd Edition Challenge is a marathon, not a sprint, but there was something this year that caused people to run the last .2 miles like they were fleeing from a pack of wolves. Maddix is one of those people having painted an insane amount of models in the final month with over two challenges worth of models painted!

So having finished up all the pledged models by the end of Month 5 and having had a month of ‘real life’ that has involved being busy at work and family holidays I’ve not managed to finish any bonus models this month.
As a result I’ve managed to go back and finished up all of the banners for the Snakebites, Boarboyz and Runtherd. I’ve also managed to start a few projects related to this army that are going to carry forward, but nothing that’s been finished up.
I’ve come out of the end of this challenge with another playable army, and one that’s full of some classic models that I’ve wanted to put on the table since I was 12! I’ve also managed to get them on the table for a few games, which has been great.
Huge thanks need to go to the wonderful folks who run this challenge and keep us all on the straight and narrow. Also massive thanks to all my fellow travellers on this journey, who’ve kept me going with the constant stream of amazing and inspiring hobby – it really does help keep me motivated seeing what everyone else is up to.
Wachtmeister: Finishing up the banners on his models is more than enough to count for an entry in my book, even if they don’t cost any points. Rule of cool is a big factor and they really tie the army together! Looking at this force reminds me what a terrific job Tom does every year, I particularly love his Freebooter Kaptains, whether it be the actual Kaptain, the Blood Axe, or even Badrukk! Man, I wish I picked that model and grots up when he was on Made to Order not that far back!

I got finished up last month so this is purely a bonus model. Had semester break this month which was a lovely change of pace, spent most of the month cleaning up my Inquisition retinues and doing some kit bashing which is my favourite part of the hobby.
I primed this one up along with my prior tanks so I decided to get it painted up as well. It’s not strictly a 2nd ed one as it’s converted into a more modern Russ variant but it’s still the classic kit.
Thanks again for running a fun challenge. I’ll likely be back next year as I’m swimming in guard still to paint and this 11th ed starter set has been staring me down for a while so I might get a bit distracted soon.

Wachtmeister: One of the great things about the Leman Russ is how even later variants still work in 2nd Edition. It shows the strength of the STC for sure! I can’t believe a guard player could be swimming in unpainted models after a 2nd Edition Challenge. Who owns that many guardsmen? <looks around nervously>

This Assault Combat Squad completes my final squad type, meaning I now have a full collection of 2 10 man Tactical Squads, a 10 man Devastator Squad and a 10 man Assault Squad. Looking at them all ranked up on the shelf really is a sight. To wrap up the month I decided to knuckled down and paint Tycho, a magnificent model and a joy to paint once I got past the fear of screwing it up, and completed in only two nights!
Wrapping up the challenge I’ve now painted everything I pledged, with a few extra veteran marines for a bit of interest. I’m really happy I stuck with it despite a few tough moments. This also means Ive now got a decent Blood Angels army when added to the models I painted for the 3rd 40k2ndEd challenge a few years ago. Still a lot of units I want to add, but really happy with how this looks all together now.
Thanks to those running the challenge and the other participants, it’s been great fun and I recommend it to anyone interested in 2ndEd.
Wachtmeister: Richard is one of those painters who makes his army look like it could be the back cover of White Dwarf, his figures are just that crisp and clean. As I was opening his attachments I laughed out loud as each picture showed a bigger and bigger army. I was wondering if there was going to be a fourth picture showing off a full Battle Company! I guess that’s what a future challenge is for! Great job on Tycho, his NMM armor is incredible!

Wachtmeister: His daughters drawing as a backdrop beats the backdrop I made one million percent! I have loved watching this Rogue Trader inspired Dark Angels army grow. The checkers have been insane, The Unforgiven banner is a terrific use of the pop culture theme, and while I’m not sure I understand the Technicolor Dreamcoat cloak in the terrain piece this has been one of my favorite armies. Justin’s take on the classic Dark Angels captain model is one of my favorite versions of this model, including my own!
