The turf must flow! – Science Fiction terrain

PygmyHippo had a decent amount of pink Astroturf leftover from the board he made so he donated it to me so I could make my own science fiction crop fields. I had a bunch of precut MDF bases that I wanted to use for terrain so this was the perfect excuse! I gave PygmyHippo a bunch of the MDF for his use and got to work on making my fields. I used a pair of scissors to cut the Astroturf into the shape of the MDF boards, leaving room to add some earth texture that I mixed up with some railroad ballast and cheap brown house paint that I got on discount at the hardware store.

PygmyHippo also suggested using black caulk to hide the join between the turf and the base. Some of these I did a decent job covering the caulk with the ballast and paint, others I didn’t.

One of the cool things PygmyHippo did on his bases was add extra alien foliage. I didn’t leave myself quite enough room to go as detailed as he did but I’m thinking if I can find some of that bizarrely colored lichen I can cover up the spots that the caulk is showing through. I also realized he got a better coverage with the ballast than I did so maybe I’ll go back and give mine another coat, but knowing me that probably won’t actually happen as I have many other projects to work on!

Mine aren’t perfect but they are certainly done and I look forward to using them on a gaming table in the not distant future!
