Lets go take a look at Month 5 Wave 3 of the 40k 2nd Edition Challenge! Looks like the pop culture round wasn’t very popular this year, but once again these armies are all really nice even if no one played along with our semi secret bonus objective!

Unit 01: Warp Spider Squad [164 pts] – Death spinner Monofilament Gun, Warp Spider Jump Generator
Unit 02: Warp Spider Exarch [90 pts] – Warp Spider Jump Generator and 2 Death Spinners
Unit 03: Eldrad Ulthan [202 pts]
Unit 04: Fuegan, The Burning Lance [141 pts]
Unit 05: Jain Zar, The Storm of Silence [132 pts]
Month five and we’ve made up for the failure of month four! I finished the Warp Spider squad and exarch and then added in my three remaining characters. Eldrad Ulthan was my favorite of the squad to paint; the gold trim on his armor was a treat, as were all the jewels on his attire.
On the wargaming front, the kid and I have created a whole set of table terrain to populate our newly-purchased green grass mat. We used pink insulation foam, cut it with a foam cutter. A little paint and flock later and we had a pile of small hills to use. It’s been a lot of fun teaching the next generation how to play the game. His space marines have been doing a number on the space elves, which has helped 😉
For next month, I have some bonus models I’m looking forward to sharing! They’ve been sitting in the painting queue for about three years, so now is their time.
Till next month!
Wachtmeister: I really like the icy bases TJM is using, they look excellent with his figures. In true 2nd Edition style they’ll fit right in with his new green grass table! I also notice he is doing the ever in vogue pink weapons, the trend is going strong!

Callidus Assassin – 237 points
Imperial Guard Squad 1 – Sergeant with Power Sword and Plasma Pistol, Missile Launcher team, meltagun – 146 points
Imperial Guard Squad 2 – Sergeant with Chainsword and autopistol, Missile Launcher team, meltagun – 139 points
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ 3 Autocannons – 108 points
Comm Link Operator – 40 points
Lascannon team – 50 points
Phew, what a month! First of all I have officially completed my original challenge with the Callidus Assassin. I had planned on painting 30 infantry models in month 5 so I saved one of the easiest Assassins for this month. I actually finished her with a few hours to spare on the last day of the month, along with basing all the other models. I also forgot I was going to use scenic bases so I had to paint the scenic elements the same final morning! After using contrast paints for almost every element of my command squad last month and deciding I didn’t like it I came up with a similar color scheme but using traditional paints for everything but the cloaks. I will definitely need to go back and touch some things up and add some highlights but for painting 30 figures in a month I’m pretty happy. Despite starting over and repainting so many elements during the month my crisis level was pretty low, I guess only really having to do one model helps!
Wachtmeister: I’m pretty sure this is the most I’ve ever painted in a month, lets not go expecting this again!

Between the Dread and the Painboy the last of the 1,000pt pledge is done! I just had to go build the dread with its arms waving in the air. I love John Blanche’s art where ork vehicles are covered in glyphs, and all manner of other markings, so plenty of markings were added in. The dread also got a ton of weathering (possibly too much). I tried something new with the weathering by slapping down some texture paint (army painter dark rust) over the undercoat but under the basecoat to add some more texture to the model, which worked great especially when washes came into play. The Painboy was a bit of a struggle, I’ll probably go back over him to add some blood and grime, and maybe a bit more to the banner, it feels a bit plain and clean. I managed to sneak a few bonus models in to bolster my Goff mob and getting some Bad Moons in there since the poor Bad Moons were getting badly outnumbered in their own army. Next month will be an interesting challenge as I’m hoping to bulk out some squads and hit the 3 vehicle objective. but most of the month will be spent travelling in Japan for a family holiday. Fingers crossed that I get done what I aim to do!
Wachtmeister: I absolutely LOVE this dread waving his arms in the air as if he were auditioning for the role of the cardboard dread in the 2nd edition box! If it were up to me he’d get the job, but Flat Kanley already has it!

Dark Reaper Exarch, 1, Dark Reaper Range Finder, Web of Skulls, 83 points
Dark Reapers, 3, default wargear, 201 points
This month I was able to find some time to give my 2nd edition Eldar an upgrade to their firepower with some Dark Reapers. I painted Maughn Ra in the first month of this challenge, and I matched that scheme this month for the rest of the squad.
Next month I hope to finish my half painted Eldrad and possibly add a few more models before the challenge comes to an end.
Wachtmeister: I really like the dark blue and red on these Dark Reapers, they are a very classic Eldar combination! The bone on the Reaper Cannons looks terrific and ties in nicely with the web of skulls!

Eldar Scouts, 5 models, needle sniper rifle, 115 points
Warwalker with scatter laser and plasma cannon 145 points
Continued with my tried and tested scheme for this months pledge, painting the scouts in two batches and then finishing the warwalker in one concentrated push. The camo cloaks came out looking really nice I think and I am happy with the overall result as well!
Wachtmeister: Relentless Barrage is another contestant who could make a living teaching people how to paint yellow! Those camouflage cloaks look awesome and really fit in with the Eldar Codex aesthetic for these models. They blend in by not blending in!

Another month, another unit I didn’t plan to do… but at least it’s still the same army.
This time it’s a squad of 3rd edition Dark Eldar jetbikes, reworked to fit my Eldar pirate force—the Sunblitz Brotherhood. I stripped off the spikes, gave them sharper, more Eldar-style helmets, and converted them to carry shuriken catapults.
The colour scheme stays tight: yellow, orange, and black. Bright, simple, and consistent across the army.
I also swapped out the old clear flight stands for wire rods on larger oval bases. They’re sturdier and look better on the table (in my opinion!).
Finished them off with a some banners!
Wachtmeister: Vectis did a terrific job of making these 3rd Edition Dark Eldar look like their 2nd Edition Craftworld Eldar cousins! The banners are terrific and are a great addition to month 3’s leopard print theme!

Chimera x2 140+140 (280)
Techpriest Enginseer x2 30+30 (60)
All done! 2 squads, a bunch of characters and a few tanks. I’m very happy with the tech priest I did this month, I think they came out great. Finished up all the basing and got them nice and dusty looking.
I had some problems matching the tanks to the previous one, I had to spray some filters over them to get the colour temperature close, it’s still a bit off but it’s not super noticeable outside of the desk lamp light.
A lot more comfortable painting them this month as I finished up exams early in the month. Still struggling taking pictures with my phone, especially group shots. Might have to look into a proper camera.
I had fun again with the challenge, thanks for running it. Now only another 120 or so infantry to do!
Cheers,
Psykka
Wachtmeister: Now that the army is all based it really looks like a nice cohesive force! I hope Psykka has better luck with his techpriests than I’ve ever had with my Techmarines, those guys never seem to fix anything!

5x Chaos Marine, Lascannon, Missile Launcher with Frag and Krak Missiles, Aspiring Champion (Power Armour, Gaze of Slaanesh, Mark of Slaanesh)
Somehow everything was going great till I decided to add banners… I think cutting them out before painting was a mistake. Also, adding weird half assed symbols was a mistake! And lastly, the leopard pattern on the banners is way worse than on the armour… doh! I think I had an idea but in the end it was too rushed to come through. I might give the banners another shot once. One stroke of brilliance is the poles: they’re made from plastic floor brush hairs… so they’re completely bendy! A friend tipped me off on that one.
Now that it’s nearly over I just need to finish the noise marines… they’re my Balrog! I’m dreading them!
Wachtmeister: It appears the Dr isn’t thrilled with this months entry but I think they look super hair band and really rock out the vibe. I love these guys, if you can’t hear Dee Snider just looking at them you need to have your eyes, ears, or both checked out!
Another month wrapped up, one to go!
