Smashbash Miniatures – A product line review

If you spent any time in the vendor hall at Adepticon this year you probably heard the raucous chanting of “TEETH! TEETH! TEETH!” If you sought out the sound to find out the source of the commotion you would have ended up in a booth that looked like a creepy parlor in some long faded mansion. If you got that far you would know you found Smashbash Miniatures home to some of the most old school metal (and resin) miniatures around. The whole crew gave off the old school Punk Rock feel of the late 1980’s and their energy was terrific. To set the tone of how old school they are they actually offer a paper catalogue full of their miniatures.

From the artwork on the cover to the pictures of the miniatures inside I was transported back to a time before everything was found on the internet and produced by slick miniature companies. Just take a look at those lovely miniatures and their old school feel! (Don’t worry though, they do have an online store, you can find it at smashbash.org)

I love their packaging too, again super retro and metal as all get out!

I bought the Negation Titan and was given Sun Rot – Core characters by one of the Adepticon staff who was walking around handing out random merch. I initially got some role playing dice and told the gentleman no thanks as I don’t play any roll playing games so he went back in the bag and I got these awesome miniatures instead. They would make terrific familiars, or the start of a grimdark warband for games such as Frostgrave or Mordheim. The casts are crisp and the models are super characterful!

Besides the chants of TEETH I was lured over to the Sun Rot booth to look for the Negation Titan. I was talking to someone at The Old World tournament who said they had an awesome model that could be used as a Giant Spawn and boy was he right! This monster is cast in resin and is full of horrifyingly good detail. If this thing doesn’t capture the horror of the warping influence of Chaos nothing does!

The cool thing is he fits perfectly on the Giant Spawn base, something I’ve had a hard time finding through other manufacturers. I bought a great model from Reaper without seeing it in person and it was way to big, it’s great that this thing fits!

The casting was over all very crisp with only a very slight mold line on one of the fingers, errrr, legs, errrr horrifying appendages. This will be easy enough to clean up with a modeling knife and maybe a little bit of green stuff. The only thing I’m not thrilled with is how thick the bottom of the miniature is. It’s not one piece so it’s not quite a base and it’s taken some work to get rid of it. Or rather, it is taking some work because I haven’t quite got rid of all of it yet. I would think that part could be a little thinner, but this is a minor gripe and for such a cool model the little bit of work is worth it.

If you like old school miniatures with old school flair Sun Rot miniatures are for you. I really recommend you check them out and if you see something you like support a small business!
