Revenge of the Rats – Skaven versus Nurgle, A Spearhead Battle Report

Last time I played my buddies Maggot Kin of Nurgle he outright crushed me in two turns. We re-read the rules and realized one of his Rot flies and one of his units of Plague Bearers was not supposed to arrive on the table until Turn 3. Including his Spoilpox Scrivener that meant this game he was going to start off with 4 out of his 6 units. Did it make a difference? Read on to find out!

Our starting deployment.

The forces of Nurgle got the first turn so the infantry lurched forward to claim objectives and the Blightlord swooped into the Skaven lines to engage the clanrats.

The timely use of the Command Card Fight to the Last, along with their ability to bring D3 clanrats back at the end of each turn caused the foul Daemon to get locked into combat with the chittering hordes!

Seeing a chance to be sneaky the Clawleader on his giant rat snuck behind the giant fly in an attempt to kill it off before help arrived. Which vector of the unclean would be victorious? The Skaven Warplock Engineer bravely stayed behind to maintain control of his objective while the bulk of the ratmen pushed towards the center in an attempt to gain the central dais.

The Rat Ogres tore the Plaguebearers appart while the Blightkings and the clantrats hacked at each other with the Blightkings getting the better of the deal!

At the end of the first turn the forces of Nurgle were up 4-3, things were starting off tight!

In the next turn the fight in the center continued with the Rat Ogres finishing off the Plaguebearers and the Blightkings putting a serious dent in the Clanrat Unit. The Skaven Clawleader and his Clanrats were able to kill off the Blightlord and his giant fly and due to a twist card the Clawleader gained an extra victory point and gained a wound back!

The Skaven took a significant lead this turn going up to 9 VP’s to Nurgles 4 all while eliminating two units! It was going in to turn three though so the second unit of Plaguebearers and the second Blightlord were about to show up!

The Skaven won first action and advanced towards the center of the board so they could better react to the soon to arrive Nurgle Daemons. The Rat Ogres and the Blightkings exchanged wounds and the Nurgle General slowly worked his was backwards from the rampaging Rat Ogres. The Nurgle Daemons advanced down the right side of the board to prevent the Warlock Engineer from claiming the objective while the newly arrived Blightking showed up on the far left flank as the Clanrats in the center helped eliminate some of that monsters deployment options.

Moving in to the next turn the Skaven lead was still five, up 11 to 6.

The Maggotkin got first turn and so the Plaguebearers charged the Warplock Engineer who was bravely standing on the back of the board heroically firing (and missing with) his Warplock Jezzail.

The Blightkings engaged the remaining Rat Ogre…

and promptly cut him down with their huge scythes!

In their turn the Skaven clanrats moved up to contest the central objective after the Grey Seer blessed them with an extra 4 Objective Control points. While they were likely to lose quite a few rats in the Nurgle turn they were in a strong position to contest the Draconith objective through the turn. Meanwhile the Claw leader was able to use his superior speed to outflank the Spoilpox Scrivener. Before charging in he opened with his repeating pistol and finally found his target. For most of the game he was shooting with way more enthusiasm than accuracy but as he faced the enemy general he scored three unsaved wounds!

The Clawleader charged in against his opposite number which allowed my opponent to use his counter charge strategum to engage the clanrats!

Overjoyed by his successful shooting and confident in his 8 attacks with his Warforged Halberd and 4 attacks from his mighty Gnaw-beasts fangs the Clawleader only managed to put two wounds on his foe, but they were enough and Nurgles emmisary went down!

In the center of the board the Blightkings were able to eradicate the clanrats and take the Draconith objective. Using another stratagem the Nurgle player was able to bring two Plaguebearers back to life reclaiming the topmost objective! Having suffered the effects of a Skaven tactic card the newly entered fly’s movement was seriously curtailed and he was stuck hovering at the side of the board. With no cards in his hand to get further victory points the game ended…

in a Skaven victory! We thought the game was heading to a Skaven blowout but in the end the ratmen only won 15-14! The game was much closer than it had seemed a few turns back and it just shows how fast things can swing in Spearhead!

I look forward to my next game, I hope you all enjoyed reading about this one! If there is anything better you’d like to see in an Age of Sigmar battle report feel free to leave it in the comments!
