Product Review – Star Wars Legion Galactic Republic Starter Box

I wish I was a little more timely on this review but it took quite a while for this product to get restocked. In fact, I received it five months to the day after I ordered my copy! Was it worth the wait? Let’s find out!

This box retails for $99.99 USD. It comes with the equivelent of two boxes of Clone Troopers, one box of ARC Troopers, one box of ARF Troopers which includes a Jedi Guardian, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Additionally, the box comes with the appropriate unit cards, unit upgrade cards, command cards, battle cards, dice, tokens for days, a movement tool set, and a range tool set, including the new 1/2 range tool.

Looking at the cost of the minis alone we get $234 worth of value. Adding in the value of the non miniature components which have a MSRP value of around $81 the box is valued at around $315! This is actually a little on the low side as it doesn’t factor in the value of the various cards! So, your first box saves you just over $215 if you are just starting. If you are just starting the Galactic Republic as a new army it would definetly be worth picking up a second set. You would get a value of $223 worth of minis (you don’t need a second Obi-Wan) and another $21 worth of dice. (I’m figuring you don’t “need” duplicates of the other items, although some of the extras would be nice to have.) Using this math if you get a second box you are still getting a bonus of $144 USD! And to think, people say math is useless!

Let’s take a closer look at the components. If you played the previous version you’ll note a lot of the tokens look different, but most should be recognizable to you. You’ll also see the points dashboard in the upper right of the picture. Another neat new addition is the silhouette templates on the bottom left sheet (the blue and red rectangles.)

Dice, bases, and movement templates haven’t changed since last edition. The new range sticks, including the 1/2 range stick, are chunkier and hopefully a little more robust because of this. My buddy does not like that the bottom of the sticks are hollow, but this doesn’t bother me!

The Clone Trooper sprues along with the Obi-Wan sprue.

ARC and ARF trooper sprues.

As you can see these miniatures are now all in hard plastic as opposed to the soft plastic of the previous versions. The details are sharper, although you do have to do more work to assemble the figures. They are also ever so slightly bigger as well. I’m a fan of these sculpts and look forward to assembling and painting them. My friends are happy that I finally have the correct cards so we can start using all the rules for choosing the scenario and so on! I would warn you to be careful opening the box and pulling everything out, there were a few miniature pieces that had fallen off the sprue into the bottom of the box, you want to make sure you don’t lose anything!

It took longer than I would have wanted for this set to get back in stock, but it was worth the wait for sure!
