Two days before one of my game nights I was talking to a friend about the state of my Warmaster army. I was about 150 points away from having a fully painted 1,000 point army and during the conversation I mentioned I was going to have to use an unpainted unit and dump a bunch of points into magic items. My friend was surprised I’d play with unpainted miniatures as I’m normally committed to only playing painted. While this is true I do feel it’s ok to play some games with unpainted miniatures under certain conditions. Mass battle games are one such condition as I hate to see people kept from playing for months at a time when they are working on a new army, or are new themselves. As long as progress is being made I’m ok with seeing unpainted figures. Would I rather play with and against fully painted armies? Absolutely! Are there times I’d just like to actually get to play a game? You bet!
In this case my friend pointed out I could probably paint a dragon in the time I had before the game and luckily he was right! I didn’t have to play unpainted after all! He was a less than ideal use of points in such a small game, but I got to play my first game of Warmaster with a fully painted army and I was very happy about that.

My friend who ended up on my side wasn’t thrilled as he thought I’d be using too many points on characters but I figured I’d rather lose with a fully painted army than win with unpainted figures so I went for it! How did it work out you ask? I guess you’ll have to wait for the battle report to find out!

What are your thoughts on playing with unpainted miniatures? Yes, no, or somewhere in between?
