40k 2nd Edition Challenge Mark V – Month 2 – Wave 2

So, last month I was unable to finish anything because Real Life and some messing up with the end date. Not this time!

For the first slice I went with Squad Montoya, a baseline unit of seven Battle Sisters equipped with bolters, a heavy flamer, a flamer and a veteran sister with hand flamer and power sword for a total of 241 points. As you can imagine, they will be tasked with assaulting fortified positions, cleaning closed spaces and overall bringing the fight to a close and personal level. They are joined by a small bonus in the form of a priest equipped with chainsword, laspistol and mesh armour for 15 points, thus making the slice a total of 256 points worth.

Now, about the models themselves, I added several bits in order to customize them (mostly purity seals), but there are not any major conversions here. This is because first, I like the models themselves quite a bit and, secondly, those models are basically a metal chunk and thus far outside my capabilities to do any major conversion on them.

About the colour scheme, I chose the bone armour and red robes mainly because I like how it looks, but also because I can be easily related to the blanchitsu style found at the Codex. As for the iconography, aside of the regular eagles and skulls of the Imperium it revolves around crosses and flames both because I think they look good on the Sisters as well as because this is the Order of the Charred Cross in memory of the way Saint Ysabel, the patron saint of the order, was martyred by Heretic priests back in M36. As for the priest, he wears the usual black and red robe I paint on all my priests (he is the sixth one!). I also decided to paint him black because I had none with that skin colour.

Lastly, I want to thank Wachtmeister for taking the mantle of leadership of this challenge. I am delighted to be here once again, enjoying the work of my fellow oldhammers!

PS: In case somebody wants to take a look at my work, this is my Instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/videnik/

Wachtmeister: Viden came back with a vengeance after last months Mulligan.  In one of our chats he mentioned pushing past the “ugly stage” of mini painting, and I’m glad he did as these are excellent!

5x mighty Scouts in black out combat gear of the Fleshtearers.

Also my Techmarine is now complete for month 1.

Really enjoyed painting these as they are my favourite scout models to have been realised.

Coming in at 176 pts

Can’t wait to see everyone’s work.

Wachtmeister: Another example of pushing through the mulligan, Shepherd delivered both this months entry and finished off last months.  I absolutely love the basing scheme he went with, I get a real Rogue Trader vibe from the whole thing!

Points this month: 160

Model Count this month: 1

Another month, another Dreadnought. Since I had messed it up with contrast paint together with the first one, it was pretty much the same tedious process as before. I will have to paint at least one more before this is over to prove that this could have been so much easier. Good news is I only have a few Skaven left to paint, and after that it will be all 40k for the next couple of months. Next up are some Wraithguard and some Warlocks to accompany the Farseer. My personal highlight for March is that I scored an Amorcast Revenant Titan, and they are usually very hard to find where Iife. This will definitely have to go into the army as an extra. And I’ll make sure to keep my hands off the contrast paint for that.

Wachtmeister:  If you don’t stare at the screen for a few minutes like I did you will think Onze just copy and pasted his second Dreadnought.  I stared so you didn’t have to, they are in fact two different models.  They both look amazing too, I really do appreciate the consistency between the two!

Hey folks!

Month 2, slice 2! Finished by the skin of this army’s talons.

This month I swapped things up and painted my third month’s slice instead of the scheduled second month slice – gargoyles instead of screamer killers. Painting the forty termagants last month put me on such a roll for batch painting, I just couldn’t stop.

That being said, I disliked painting these winged horrors. They’re finicky to assemble, a pain to balance, the wings have no detail – the list goes on! The membrane of the wings in particular gave me fits to get right. I tried five or six different color combinations and layers before landing on a base coat of pink, followed by a layer of orange and a sepia glaze. Without the sepia the wings were just too bright and stood out glaringly against the army’s scheme. In any case, I’m pretty proud of getting this banger of a unit knocked out. Even though it was half the models of last month, it felt like the same amount of “model” – these bugs have so much more mass than termagants!

Next month, screamer killers are back on the menu! A nice treat after this month’s struggles. Good luck to everyone – see you at the next slice!

Wachtmeister: I think I own two of these gargoyles and just thinking of assembling them makes me want to scream, I can’t imagine doing 20 of them!  Another great job by TJM, he definitely deserves a break with one big lump of metal next month!

Hello 2nd edition fans everywhere.  I am sending in this month’s entry while traveling for spring break.  So no long explanations about the models or my designs for when I get them on the table, other than I’m already drooling over how many of the Wachtmeister’s forces of the imperium I’ll mow down with those twin linked autocannons.  Good fortune to all my fellow participants and thanks to Wachtmeister for running this crazy train.  See you next month!

Wachtmeister: I think I’m going to have disallow these models on my table, look at those bases!  How can my mortars cover those giant things?  Seriously though, these guys look terrific and I can’t wait to destroy them on the first turn as I generally do against Jon’s new models!

5 models, 258 points.

I knew things were going to be tight this month between my classes and my various trips, and I was right.  I was taking pictures of these guys when I realized I didn’t get around to putting a matte varnish over the decals to dull down the gloss coat I applied them over.  Oh well, that’s a problem for later in the month!  Overall I’m pretty happy with how these guys came out.  I haven’t tried painting over a white undercoat since I first painted these guys way back in the late 90’s, and I forgot about some of the difficulties.  White isn’t an easy color to paint but I decided to give it a shot.  I was between white bone and tan bone.  When I first tried painting these models Deathwing were more of a white than tan so that is what I went with!  I will probably do the other four terminators next month so I can have this unit finished after almost thirty years!

4 models, 317 points

Unfortunately Rat Lord and Peter both had to take a mulligan this month.  Hopefully they rally and make it back with us next month!
