Welcome to the Second Edition 40k Challenge. Dr. The Viking over at The Cowabunga Journal hosted challenges 1-4, I hosted challenges 5 and 6 here, and together we are running this, the seventh iteration on both blogs! We will be alternating who posts each entry first, but rest assured both blogs will be posting all the entries. This year we have 34 contestants, including the hosts. It’s way closer to 40 than I had hoped but working together I think we can do it!
With that lets get in and check out the first wave of contestants!

Shepherd

Life’s been getting In the way of any hobby time of late and I was going to sit this one out but seeing the guys getting excited I could just watch in the back ground .
Looking forward to the bonus rounds and can’t wait to see everyone’s great work.
So iv gone for a compact strike force of Iron warriors to roll onto the battle field .
Army list below:
| Unit Type | Unit Name | Equipment/Abilities | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| HQ | Chaos Sorcerer Lord | Mark of Tzeentch | 221 |
| Elite | Exalted Champion | Bike, Power Fist, Flamer, Krak Grenades | 131 |
| Troops | X4 Marines | X3 Bolters, X1 Flamer, X1 Champion (Power Axe/Sword) | 285 |
| Fast Attack | X3 Bikes | 1x Melta | 143 |
| Heavy Support | Land Raider | 220 | |
| Total | 1000 |
Wachtmeister: I am thrilled to see Shepherd add to his Iron Warriors army, he did a brilliant job last year and I’m sure this year will be on different! You don’t see full Iron Warriors armies in 2nd Edition all that often making this entry extra special!

MaxTheHack

I have played Warhammer 40k off and on throughout the years. I started with 2nd edition. I took a brief hiatus at the end of 3rd and returned for 5th edition. I never played 6th-7th, and I came back at the tail end of 8th edition. I have been fortunate to play with the same group of friends each time I jumped back in, and this most recent time we have even gotten some of our kids involved in the game which has made our gaming sessions a lot of fun.
So why go back to Warhammer 2nd edition?
While the new rules have been streamlined, I do miss the feats of glory your models could do in 2nd edition. We have great tales of heroic deeds from our games of 2nd edition; however, I was a kid when I last played 2nd. I feel like it would be fun to try it again and see what I would think of our playgroup’s stories after I understand the game better.
Second, I have painted a lot of models now, and it would be nice to see how much farther I have progressed. For reference, here is a warlock I painted in 2nd edition.
Finally my best friend has always collected old models, so I can easily get together for a 2nd edition game. One of my goals for the new year is to play 40k more, and that includes getting in some 2nd edition games.
For a starting army, I chose Eldar since that is peak nostalgia for me. It is the first army I played and painted. The first models I acquired when I started playing 2nd edition were Warp Spiders, Striking Scorpions, and Dark Reapers, and my first addition to the army was an Eldar Dreadnought. I have also kept an Eldrad Ulthran model for 25+ years that I have never painted or glued to its base, and it feels fitting to finally give it some life.
For this painting challenge, each squad or character is around 200 points, which makes it manageable. I will paint one squad or character each month so I do not get bored painting the same colors. I am aiming for classic schemes using an Alaitoc scheme where applicable, including Warp Spiders in black white and red, Eldrad Ulthran in black and bone, Striking Scorpions in green and yellow, the Dreadnought in blue and yellow, and Dark Reapers in navy and red.
Army List:
| Units | Quantity | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Eldrad Ulthran | 1 model | 220 |
| Dark Reaper Squad | 3 models | 201 |
| Striking Scorpion Squad | 6 models | 156 |
| Warp Spider Squad | 5 models | 205 |
| Eldar Dreadnought | 1 model | 205 |
| Total | 987 |
Wachtmeister: Getting figures you’ve owned for 25+ years is the whole reason this challenge exists so I’m really looking forward to Max’s take on Eldrad Ulthran!

TJM

Hello all! Once again, I’m back to attempt this challenge for the fourth time. After two years of painting Tyranids, most all the second edition bugs are painted so now, it’s back to Eldar, baby! These space elves were what I painted for the first year of this challenge – and now there’s more!
For this go around, I’m knocking out some more of my aspect warriors – Swooping Hawks, Dark Reapers, and Fire Dragons (with their respective exarchs) as well as everyone’s favorite second edition menace – Warp Spiders! On top of that, we have to paint our Phoenix Lords, Maugan Ra, Jain Zar, and Fuegan, as well as the Farseer of Farseers, Eldrad Ulthran! The total comes out to just a bit over 1000 points. Okay, well, quite a bit more – 1639 points to be exact! It turns out Eldrad and the Dark Reapers themselves are 550 points alone, and it did not seem to be in the spirit of the challenge – or my painting style! – to have half the challenge composed of only six infantry models.
On the chance that I scrounge some extra hobby time, there may or may not be some Armorcast vehicles slithering about, searching for some paint, but I’ll leave them to “wave” from the sidelines for now!
Without further ado, the slices!
| Unit | Models | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Reapers | 5 | 348 |
| Swooping Hawks | 5 | 184 |
| Fire Dragons | 5 | 187 |
| Warp Spiders | 5 | 254 |
| Eldrad Ulthran | 1 | 202 |
| Fuegan | 1 | 141 |
| Jain Zar | 1 | 189 |
| Maugan Ra | 1 | 134 |
| Total | 24 | 1639 |
Wachtmeister: I’m so used to TJM’s horde army that still coming to grasp with the idea that he is only doing 24 models, even if those 24 models represent a 63.9% increase over the 1,000 point challenge! I’m not surprised at all to find out he has some Armorcast vehicles to join the fight though!

Relentless Barrage
Here is my starting entry for the 40k 2nd Edition Army Challenge VII. I already have a reasonably sized Eldar (Iyanden) army, but it lacks some key components, some of which I have included in this list.
I mostly play 3rd Edition, but 2nd Edition holds a very special place in my heart, as I started my Blood Angels army around 1995. I also briefly owned an Eldar army at about the same time, but it was traded away for more Blood Angels.
Over the last few years, I have steadily been painting Eldar again, some of which can be seen on my Instagram account, @relentlessbarrage.
In my entry I included 2 models with banner poles, I would love to try freehand painting banners someday but more likely I will go with printed banners this time.

| Unit | Models | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Dire Avenger Squad | 5 models | 110 |
| Eldar Scout Squad | 5 models | 115 |
| Guardian Squad | Not specified | 55 |
| Eldar War Walker | 1 model | 145 |
| Shining Spear Squad | 5 models | 250 |
| Warp Spider Squad | 5 models | 205 |
| Asurmen | 1 model | 155 |
| Optional Addition | ||
| Eldar Falcon Grav Tank | 1 model | 213 |
Wachtmeister: With three entries containing Warp Spiders in a row I’m not sure I’ll be able to think of anything but templates when I go to sleep tonight! Relentless Barrage has a good strategy breaking up the painting of the Shining Spears. I’m looking forward to seeing them painted as they didn’t get much love back in the day!

Xtra_Tomatillo_Sauce

I’d like to enter the 2nd edition army painting challenge! I plan on painting about 1k points worth of Chaos Space Marines. They were my first army when I started playing back in 2nd edition days and I’ve strayed away from them since. I plan to paint the main body of this force as Iron Warriors, with some Khornate troops mixed in.
| Unit Type | Points |
|---|---|
| Chaos Lord | 91 |
| Sorcerer | 52 |
| Icon Bearer | 55 |
| Chaos Champion of Khorne | 58 |
| 5x Chaos Marines (1x Plasma) | 133 |
| 5x Chaos Marines (3x Missile Launchers) | 230 |
| 5x Khorne Berzerkers | 165 |
| Chaos Dreadnought (Autocannon & Scourge) | 190 |
| Total | 974 |
Wachtmeister: Shepherd has some company painting Perturabo’s sons the Iron Warriors this challenge. I always like seeing different takes on the same concept in a challenge so I’m anxiously awaiting Xtra’s vision!

Jon McMaster

As the currents of warpspace ever whirl in the Maelstrom of the 41st millennium we find ourselves at the opening of the 7th second edition army challenge. This time we shall be guided by a mighty triumvirate consisting of the Wachtmeister, Pygmy Hippo, and the venerable Dr The Viking returning to offer inspiration to his creation. The powerful trio will continue to mentor the participants with their wisdom gained in prior challenges, which mostly just consists of knowing when to tell the participants to stop complaining and get their models painted.
After painting some classic Space Wolves in the sixth challenge, this season I will go in yet another new direction for my accumulated armies – the fearsome Blood Angels! The inspiration to paint a new faction for this challenge slowly coalesced from several sources, some recent and some very old. Top of the list is having a surplus of marine models of various types from the last ten years of bargain hunting and lot buying. Having excess terminators, scouts, and 2nd edition marine bodies gave me the supplies I needed, and years of marinating in the lore of all the chapters of Space Marines fleshed out the structure of the pledge. The deadly Blood Angels could incorporate all these bits and bobs into a viable force to fight alongside my Dark Angels. The beautiful Blood Angel Terminators from the RT era studio army used in all the Space Hulk ads always held my fascination from the earliest days of my hobby life. Trying to emulate that style on my Terminator close assault squad will be a lot of fun. Next, the idea of painting a veteran assault squad with the distinctive yellow helmets and red armor of the Blood Angels has been another long held painting goal. Plus you can never have enough red in 2nd edition so why not paint entire marines red! Using one of my numerous scout sergeants and squads, Blood Angels scouts with bolters will add some infiltrating cover fire to my allied contingent. Finally some characters will round out my pledge with Blood Angels captain and Techmarine. For Dreadtober a few years ago I painted a classic Blood Angels Mark IV dreadnought, so my Angels of Death will need a Techmarine to bring their ancient warrior to the field of battle. The characters in my DA and SW armies do not include a 10th company captain so taking inspiration from the scout squad in this force my mighty hero will be a scout company captain for the Blood Angels. Splitting the veteran assault squad into two 5 model months leaves me a month for mulligan or bonus content and I am really pulling for the latter and not the former. In game the Blood Angels will provide a powerful close combat punch as an allied force for my shooting focused Dark Angels from previous challenges. The veteran assault squad and close assault Terminators can win combats with ease while being supported by the anti-tank capability of the dread. Given the history of the Lion and the Wolf, these Blood Angels will make a much more fitting ally to bring some melee power to my Dark Angels of earlier challenges.Similar to last season, I still have the classic two color Blood Angels paints from the Space Marine paint set I bought in 1991. The paints inside are still very viable, if not a bit translucent as all Citadel paints were at the time. I got some good results last season on my Space Wolf grey, but also fulfilled my prediction of clogging my airbrush with 30 year old paint. Also I have a few Blood Angel specific bits and look forward to some mild kitbashes to help sell the veteran status of the squads.Although it gives the Wachtmeister nightmares when I say things like this, I have at least four more challenges worth of 2nd edition armies to work on for the future, 1,000 points each of Orks, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, and now Blood Angels to definitively finish all four of those armies. For now, you can follow along with my progress over at my blog, 1st Legion Chronicles (https://1stlegionchronicles.blogspot.com/) a refuge for all things Unforgiven, Orks, Space Wolves, and now Blood Angels too! Thanks to the Wachtmeister, Pygmy Hippo, and Dr the Viking for voluntarily submitting to this insanity again, and good luck to all the participants involved in the challenge this time around. Also thanks to my trusty piece of 2’x2′ plywood that forms the background of all my starting point photos for all seven challenges 🙂
| Unit Name | Models | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Captain Aurelius Thrax | 1 | 102 |
| Squad Baelor Terminator Squad | 5 | 382 |
| Squad Arcturus Veteran Assault Squad | 10 | 403 |
| Squad Severian Scout Squad | 5 | 114 |
| Techmarine Varro | 1 | 49 |
| Total | 1050 |
Wachtmeister: Once again I’d like to welcome Jon’s 2’x2′ board of plywood back to the challenge! Oh fine, Jon is welcome as well. Jon has certainly made his rounds through the non-codex Space Marine chapters! I’m hoping he gets some Death Company marines in this challenge as a bonus, those were always some of my favorite models! I do wonder if he’s already planning his “next challenge” army of Ultramarines to get the big four done!

M4cr0dutch

This year I am returning to my first love in 40K, the Dark Angels. My recent games have exposed a glaring deficiency in my collection, a lack of mobile units. My plan is to explore the Ravenwing, having never painted them for 2nd Ed. before. My 1000 points includes a large Ravenwing Bike Squadron, an Attack Bike and Ravenwing Master. Backing them up would be an attack squad of Assault marines (including flamer conversion) as well as a Librarian, all equipped with jump packs. I am also hoping to complete a squad of Deathwing Terminators as a bonus, as well as some other characters if all goes well.
| Unit | Points | Equipment/Options |
|---|---|---|
| Epistolary Librarian | 182 | Force sword, Bolt pistol, Jump pack, Conversion field |
| Master of the Ravenwing | 156 | Bike, Power sword, Melta bombs, Meltagun, Targeter |
| Ravenwing Attack Bike | 120 | Multimelta |
| Assault Combat Squad | 225 | Jump packs, Flamer, Hand flamer and chainsword, Plasma pistol and chainsword, Plasma pistol and powerfist, Bolt pistol and powerfist |
| Ravenwing Bike Squadron | 317 | Plasma gun, Meltagun, 2 x powerfists, Power sword |
| Total Points | 1000 |
Wachtmeister: Every Space Marine army needs fast elements considering in 2nd Edition Space Marines only move 4″, right Jon McMaster? M4cr0dutch is going to do a great job on these ebon clad warriors of the Lion!

Vectis

This project marks my third painting challenge. In the past I’ve completed a Fallen Dark Angels Chaos force and Necromunda‑themed Imperial Guard army. My very first opponent back when I started playing 40K was a friend with an Eldar army. I still remember his elegant space elves effortlessly wiping out my Blood Angels, and I also remember painting his Avatar — at the time it felt like one of my best pieces, though I suspect it wouldn’t hold up quite as well today.
Over the years I picked up various Eldar models during 2nd and 3rd edition, but only ever painted the odd miniature here and there. It always felt like a project waiting for the right moment…
I’d collected a fair number of 3rd‑edition Dark Eldar, and although I always liked the sculpts, they never seemed to get much love from painters at the time. Years ago I began converting them into Eldar Pirates — less spiky, more in line with the smoother Rogue Trader‑era aesthetic, with trimmed‑down shoulder pads and shorter, sleeker weapons. These Pirates will form the core of the army, led by a Farseer and supported by Striking Scorpions and Howling Banshees, with a Falcon grav tank providing fire support. I’m also including an Exarch to lead the Scorpions, Drazhar, the fallen Phoenix.
For inspiration I’ll be looking back at classic Epic Space Marine and Rogue Trader colour scheme. The list comes in just under 1,000 points, mainly because I’d love to include another Howling Banshee, but I don’t currently have the model.
| Unit Type | Number of Models | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Farseer | 1 | 185 |
| Exarch | 1 | 64 |
| Pirate Champion Executioner | 1 | 27 |
| Pirate Champion Power Fist | 1 | 23 |
| Striking Scorpions | 5 | 130 |
| Howling Banshees | 4 | 108 |
| Pirate Squad A | 9 | 99 |
| Pirate Squad B | 9 | 99 |
| Falcon Grav Tank | 1 | 233 |
| Total | 968 |
Wachtmeister: Vectis’ Falle Dark Angels are one of my favorite armies to come out of the various challenges so I can’t wait to see what he does with his unique take on these Eldar!

PygmyHippo

The Horns of Bovimeth – Chaos Space Marines – PygmyHippo
When I started in the hobby, one of the most intriguing lines of models that I somehow never got into was Chaos Space Marines. I was intrigued by the “Chaos Renegades with Heavy Weapons” models I saw advertised in “Dragon” and “White Dwarf” magazines. In fact, when a game store was closing down I had a chance to buy an entire rack of them for $1 per blister (36 blisters for $36 USD!) when I was a kid, but couldn’t justify such a huge outlay of cash at the time for something I didn’t know what to do with. However, when I bought the “Warhammer 40,000 Compilation” book (1991), I was enthralled by the Genestealer Cult Army and their corrupting allies of Chaos (the beastmen and demons). So when I progressed from RT to 2nd edition the seed was already planted to go back and create a Cult army inspired by the Compilation book: brood brothers, Patriarch, hybrids, coven limos, and chaos allies. I felt that the 2E cult needed some extra toughness and shooting help, so including chaos marine allies would help strengthen the army, while also giving it the same feel as the “Compilation” army list that started me down the road to Tyranids in the first place.
My original intention for the Mark 7 painting challenge was to paint that Genestealer Cult army I always wanted. But it turned out that I wanted to include so many models that I would never be able to finish what I wanted within the time constraints of the challenge, and create a legal army list in one go without painting hundreds of minis. I had enough Rogue Trader-era Chaos models to field a legal force on their own, so I decided to lean into it and just paint Chaos this time around, and Genestealer next time. All of the models I had on hand were RT-era metal, with the exception of the Beastmen from GW’s “Battle Masters” game. I originally intended to include a second squad of 7 Chaos Marines, but last month when I heard that our beloved Dr.TheViking had returned, I decided to celebrate and bought an ebay lot of 7 metal 2nd edition Chaos Terminator marines. The price was right, and I figured they’d add a little more visual variety to the army. If I somehow manage to finish everything listed in my starting photo, I hope to add the second squad of 7 marines as a bonus. Since we only need to paint 5 out of the 6 months, I’m listing the 2 packs of beastmen as my month-6 optional goal. If I manage to paint them, great, since it’ll save me from painting them next year for the Mark 8 40k challenge… Chaos Space Marines are so overtly spawned from the depths of all that the heaviest of heavy metal stands for, that it was meant to be. “Bovimeth” is my take on the Slaaneshi black metal scene. I’m hoping their first album, “Darned to Heck,” will set the charts/Imperium on fire.
Thanks again to Wachtmeister for co-hosting this Mark 7 challenge! Running the painting challenge is not for the faint of heart, and he always carries the battle standard from the front lines. And with great tintinnabulation and censers blazing: we welcome Dr.TheViking’s return from the Eye of Terror! We all missed you!
As before, you can follow my hobby progress on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/pygmyhippo/

Without further ado, the list:

Wachtmeister: PygmyHippo always goes all in on his armies, I know this is going to be an absolutely gorgeous army! In true PygmyHippo fashion he is more than doubling the challenge requirements but with a smaller model count than normal he’s still going to be able to put out an amazing army! I read the names, pure 90’s metal right there!

Mark Rayner

Hello! Well here we go again – time for another 2nd Ed. 40k challenge! I took part in the 4th and 6th editions of the challenge, and found them to be loads of (stressful) fun, and very motivating in terms of keeping to a painting schedule. I went with Chaos Space Marines and Khorne respectively in previous challenges, and was very close to entering with a Nurgle army to round things off this time… However after being gifted a few metal Catachans and seeing some nice examples painted up online, the idea of a Jungle Fighters of Catachan army started bubbling up into my consciousness and (then a series of eBay / fb marketplace purchases)…
I already had a classic Hellhound that I knew I’d need one day, and thought the 2nd Ed era Leman Russ Demolisher with its insane giant Demolisher Cannon would be an excellent fit, and was a model I’d always wanted to try and do justice to. Several infantry squads, some Ogryns and Ratlings, a Heavy Weapons Squad, and a Command Squad, all seemed like natural choices. Commissar Yarrick is also another classic model from that era that I’ve never painted before. I also have an eclectic mix of 2nd Ed Imperial characters / members of the ecclesiarchy that might creep in as bonuses if I find the time.
The rough game plan I have is to paint the single infantry squad in the first month, using this to establish the camo pattern paint scheme and the basing method (for which I have bought an array of various materials in different shades of green). After that more infantry until I get bored, leaving the tanks to do as a block where the airbrush and some weathering techniques will hopefully do a lot of the heavy lifting. Some things that will hopefully find their way in are some sort of army banner, and some tank markings / little flags on the vehicles. Overall I’m super excited to get stuck in, especially when the camo pattern and basing are all figured out.
Of course I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s inspiring entries as we go along – always a huge motivator! Big thanks to the guys for teaming up and running it this year – Game on!
=======================
| Unit | Points Cost |
|---|---|
| Commissar Yarrick | 170 pts |
| Commander Squad, Lieutenant w. Boltgun and Power Fist, 3 flamers | 94 pts |
| 3x Infantry Squad w. meltagun and missile launcher | 140 pts each |
| Heavy weapons squad, 3x Heavy bolters | 90 pts |
| 5x Ogryns | 235 pts |
| 5x Ratling Snipers | 80 pts |
| Leman Russ Demolisher, plasma cannons, dozer blade | 265 pts |
| Imperial Hellhound – dozer blade, Hunter-killer missile | 210 pts |
| Imperial Chimera – dozer blade, Hunter-killer missile | 185 pts |
| Total | 1749 pts |
Wachtmeister: Last year I really enjoyed Mark’s Khornate entry, his take on Kharn The Betrayer, one of my favorite characters of all time, was really exceptional. He has shown he can paint red and do some nice blending with it so I have high hopes for Yarrick’s Power Claw!

James Holloway

Hello all,
Here’s my proposal for a Chaos Cult army for the Warhammer 40K 2nd edition army challenge VII. I have chosen Chaos Cult partly because I have a Chaos Space Marine army, so these will be playable both as a separate army and as an addition to my existing project. But the main reason is that the Chaos Cult army is one of the most niche and unloved armies of 2nd edition, which means that any Chaos Cult army was likely to involve a lot of creative thinking and individuality. It had almost no model releases, and when it did they were very expensive relative to the points value of the figures, which meant that Chaos Cult armies were full of conversions, third-party models, repurposed figures from other armies, and so on. I intend to approach this army in the same spirit, using repurposed Imperial Guard, Necromunda and Warhammer Fantasy models, plus all the Warzone and Fading Suns and Shockforce and so on models I can find, and only then filling in the gaps with modern plastics if I need to make up the numbers (and it is a pretty beefy number of models for 1,000 points, but then I am a pretty fast painter). I am going to have to use a weird Leman Russ proxy until I can secure an original, but at least I have this kitbash as a fallback.
I plan to post about my progress on my blog at https://www.monsterman.org/blog .
Here is my army list:
| Group | Points | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | 204 | Demagogue with carapace armour, plasma pistol and power sword: 56 points |
| Magus champion with chainsword: 34 points | ||
| 10 cultists: 9 with autopistol + chainsword, 1 with flamer: 76 points | ||
| 5 cultists with autoguns, 1 with flamer: 38 points | ||
| Group 2 | 205 | Allied Leman Russ: 205 points |
| Group 3 | 203 | 9 beastmen with bolt pistols and chainswords: 171 points |
| 1 beastman champion with bolt pistol and power axe: 32 points | ||
| Group 4 | 200 | Acolyte with carapace armour, bolt pistol and power axe: 25 points |
| Allied heavy weapons squad with lascannon & two missile launchers: 150 points | ||
| 5 cultists with autoguns: 25 points | ||
| Group 5 | 186 | Icon bearer with carapace armour and bolt pistol: 67 points |
| 10 cultists: 9 with autopistol + chainsword, 1 with flamer: 76 points | ||
| 7 cultists: 6 with autoguns, 1 with flamer: 43 points | ||
| Total | 999 |
Thanks for doing the organisation, please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Wachtmeister: I considered doing Chaos Cult at one point but somehow a bunch of my Necromunda miniatures have gone missing so I’ll have to live through James! I’m left wondering if that Leman Russ is made out of cardstock and plastic bits and I think it is. That’s already impressive!
That’s it for Wave 1 of the Introductions, Wave 2 will be here on this blog next week!
