At Fall In! this year I had managed to spend hardly any money and was almost ready to head home when I remembered a friend told me a vendor was selling off a large collection of Sails of Glory ships. I always like a sailing game, and have read quite a few books on the age of sail but never got any ships. In fact I’ve spent the last few years trying to find a good deal on Sails of Glory to use the ships both for that game and a few others I’ve collected over the years, including Games Workshop’s Trafalgar, and a friends rules, Form on Admirals Wake. It wasn’t until this show that I had any luck, and as you can see from the below it was a lot of luck!
The vendor told me his friend was a demo person for Ares Games who sadly passed away. He wanted them to go to a good home, and I was lucky enough to convince him I was that good home! I’ve only played the game a few times but from what I’m told quite a few of these ships are demo ships or prize support ships, but I’m not looking to offload any, I’m looking to set sail!

On top of this giant pile of ships there is everything I need to play Sails of Glory as seen below. Rules, chits, templates for days, scenario rules, quick reference guides, even dry erase markers and erasers! (My wife is an educator and she got pretty excited about the erasers, apparently they are high quality!)

I look forward to the quick and easy rules for Sails of Glory and am definitely looking forward to giving out Trafalgar a try, I’ve had it since 2009, and while it went missing with a friend for a few years it’s back but I’ve never used it. Looking at this pile of ships it looks like I mostly have 3rd Rates and frigates but that’s enough for a start! Additionally, my friend picked up Sailpower from Sea Dog Game Studios so we are well set!

That said I did get home and realized I don’t think I actually have a naval gaming mat, but that’s ok, I have plenty of projects I need to work on over the next few months and by the time I’ll be ready I’ll be at Cold Wars!
Do you have a favorite Age of Sail rulebook? If so what is it?
Until next time keep your powder dry, your scurvy in check and unfurl the sails!
