Battle Report Age of Sigmar – Skaven versus Maggotkin of Nurgle

I saw an issue of White Dwarf on my local shops counter and the cover proclaimed it was the 10th anniversary of The Age of Sigmar. The timing was fortuitous because that night I had played my first game of Age of Sigmar since the game first game out and replaced my beloved Warhammer Fantasy! The first battle went fast enough for us to get in a second game, which considering we often are pushing closing time in our The Old World games was a refreshing change of pace, even if things didn’t go so well for me!

Game one set up!

The Skaven focuses their shooting on the Plaguebearers and kill two of them.

The Blight King flew in and charged the Engineer, and focused his attacks on the Grey Seer cutting him down in one turn!

On the other flank the other Blight King charged a unit of Clanrats and killed half of them, but more were able to crawl out of the sewer and join the fight.

Things went from bad to worse as the Blight Kings charged in and were able to kill off the Clawlord just as he was about to summon another unit of Clanrats on the central objective! This game went fast, lasting only two turns. I quickly learned the pain of my opponent getting a double turn! I’m a glutton for punishment though so I easily volunteered to play another game! I don’t normally like to blame luck, but in this case I was rolling so far below average it wasn’t funny. Having been on the other end of the luck spectrum pushing my Nurgle Daemons against my buddy in the past I sure couldn’t complain, especially when it was getting a taste of my own poison from the forces of Nurgle! Maybe things would improve next game….

A slightly different set up, lets see how this one goes! This time I won the roll to decide who goes first and I opted to go second.

The forces of Nurgle slowly advanced as the Skaven focuses on shooting the Blight Kings in the center killing one and causing a wound on the other.

On the right flank the Nurgle forces were able to kill the Clanrats and the Engineer, with the Grey Seer heroically leading from the rear he was able to avoid the plague fathers attention… for now….

The Grey Seer legged it across the board while the Clanrats were summonsed back to the board by the Clawleader.

The combat in the center of the board turned into a blood bath as the Plague Bearers charged in. The Skaven died to a rat, with the exception of a single rat ogre who managed to kill two Blight Kings on his own!

The final picture of the board on turn 4. I ended up losing by about 5 points, but at least in this game I made it to turn 4!

Note: The day after playing this game I was listening to a podcast and found out one unit of Plaguebearers and one of the flies shouldn’t have come on until Turn 3. In the first game I’m not sure it would have made much of a difference the way I was rolling, but in the second game it might have. I also forgot to bring back clanrats every turn, not just my turn. Oh well, live and learn. Considering I haven’t played AoS since it came out and my buddy hasn’t played in a while I think we did pretty good for our first game!
