Welcome back, let’s take a look at our Wave 2 finishers!

Never quit! As I minded myself to call it a day for June on the Blood Angels side, I started the month by painting some Sisters of Battle. But the urge to add more to the army was too strong!
I had a box of terminator that was looking at me every time I went to the paint shop. So I started with those. Then added the chaplain and librarian as well.
The 5 assault marines were just a matter of time. I had the choice between them, a second tactical squad or the devastator. And finally, I like the idea of a Death Company dreadnought, like you can’t be just crazy and bloodthirsty enough, you can be put into a dread…
So the list:
Space Marine Combat Squad [192 pts]: 5x Chainsword, Hand Flamer, Jump Pack)
• 1x Assault Squad Sergeant
Terminator Squad [360 pts]:
• 2x Terminator: Chainfist, Storm Bolter
• 1x Terminator: Power Fist, Storm Bolter

Terminator Sergeant: Power Sword, Storm Bolter

Librarian [240 pts]: Psyker, Epistolary, Purity Seal, Force Axe, Hood of Hellfire, Terminator Armour: Storm Bolter

So 12 models and a dreadnought for a total of 1084 pts.

For a grant total of 64 models and 6 vehicles and 5074 points painted in 6 months!
The units in italic are the originally pledged in December.
This was a blast all the way! So much so that I have been secretly accumulating models for next year challenge! I’d like to extend my many thanks to Wachtmeister for organizing the Challenge. A big thanks also to all the participants that kept me motivated and inspired along the way!
Cheers!
Wachtmeister: In last months entry Julien told me he was finished with his entry, this month I received an email from him starting “i unfortunately painted more models…. so here’s the speech, the list and the final pictures.” While I had to change some ordering and reupload a picture I’ve never felt more models is an unfortunate thing, especially when they are a full challenges worth of models in a single month! I really like the Death Company Dreadnought and the Chaplin in Terminator army, Julien did a nice job on the black armor. It really pops amongst all the Blood Angels red armored Space Marines. Congratulations to Julien for finding one last ember of motivation for the 40k 2nd Edition Challenge, Mark VI and turning it into a full on conflagration!

Month Six, I return sort of triumphant.
With my mulligan used, and a generous extra 4 days granted by our gratious host, I made a solid attempt at both my entry and a bonus.
In my original pledge I had a dreadnaught, a larger copy of the original chaos dreadnaught which I had somehow managed to get 3 of. Given that there are 4 chaos powers I really wanted a dreadnaught for each, I decided to use bits of the 3 to make 4. 2 months later with a lot of bits and pieces and milliput I had my first scratchbuild miniature (with original dreadnaught arms). Representing nurgle with a sort of plaguebearer head. Not perfect, a bit big for the rest of my army – but an achievement non the less. A later dreadnaught or two will have weapons replacing regular arms.
Then I had to paint it…. I have struggled with this thing for months – I didn’t build it thinking of how I was to paint it. Eventually I decided to put flaking paint patches (white outlines around tinbitz) on it. That brought it from looking bad to at least looking ok.
My bonus figures, khorne marines, are pretty easy, they look good almost no matter what you do as long as you stick with the red, bronze, black paint scheme.
This army as a whole is unplayable as yet, half finished squads, illegal weapon mixes. Plus I need a lot more painted of the particualar powers to match the deamons I have – I have 6 deamonettes without nothing to summon them. The khorne squad I painted is also not legal. I’ll cost them as the parts of squads that they could be part of.
1 Chaos Dreadnaught, power claw, Mk 1 heavy plasma gun. 190 points
7 Khorne berserkers. Bolt pistols. 1 plasma pistol, 2 chainsword, 1 hand flamer. 226
1 Chaos marine (beginning of next squad). Heavy bolter. 37
project will be continuing through the rest of the year. I have a lot more marines to paint as well as several greater
This project will be continuing through the rest of the year. I have a lot more marines to paint as well as several greater deamons, a squad of bloodletters and a squad of mounted deamonettes.
Wacthmeister: I’m thrilled Adrian took the break of the mulligan and the few extra days and made a triumphant return! While he might have a few unplayable units but one of the notices of the challenge since the beginning was an army didn’t need to be legal to be part of the challenge as the thought was we’d all be adding eventually. So while there are some units to be finished Adrian should be very happy with the work he has done so far. I’m really impressed by the Plaguebearer Dreadnought, that is a lot of sculpting for that big head, and hope someday I’ll get to see how he converts the remaining bits plus the other models for the other three Chaos gods!

Well it’s been a long time in the making. Thank you so much for running this. I’ve really enjoyed the hobby and also seeing everyones pretty pics every month.
My final monthly submission is as follows.
My final entry is a mob of band moons. I managed to get a hold of another lot of rogue trader orks as well as 6 minders. Which was awesome. I decided to try an orange shade for the yellow. As opposed to using a sepia brown, which my imperial fists have. The red weapons also turned out to be a nice touch. Pretty happy with how they come together.
I decided that this metal Goff was going to be a big boss. So he also got painted yellow.
Bigboss [87 pts]: Bolt Pistol, Ork ‘Eavy Armour, Power Fist, Show Wargear Cards, Bionic Eye, Kustom Blasta
Bad Moons Boyz Mob [182 pts]: Axe, 10x Bad Moons Boyz, Flak Armour, Frag Stikkbombz, 4x Bolt Pistol, 6x Boltgun, 4x Plasma Gun, Nobz Champion (Bolt Pistol, Ork ‘Eavy Armour, Chainsword, Power Fist)
Final Army Sub
Here we are 6 months later. What started as a last minute entry, with a picture of mostly gorkamorka and 3rd ed sprues. Has evolved with a few job lot purchases, some conversions and a 3d printed battle wagon. But I’m really happy with the journey and destination. The bold colours really pop and I even put a few transfers here and there.
And boy did I get distracted with other projects! As a hobby butterfly I also painted 2 large Firestorm Armada fleets, about 1000pts of Imperial fists Primarus marines, 1000pts of 3rd ed orks. A forgeworld Hierophant biotitan. And a soviet Chain of Command force. So yeah, I got distracted.
The orks need speed in 2nd ed and this is a great starting point for my 2nd ed ork force. From here I have a shock attack gun with a bunch of snotlings, Dreadnought, 20 storm boys and 10 mega armour nobs in my pile of shame that will be getting some love in the next few months.

Ork War Buggy [65 pts]: Multi-Melta, 2x Ork Crew (Bolt Pistol, Flak Armour)
Space Ork Battlewagon [65 pts]: Ablative Armour
Wachtmeister: Wow, finding another lot of 6 Minderz is going to make Gazamataz the subject of more than a few Blood Axe Kommando raids from the other Ork players, that’s a nice find! As always I really like the bright colors Gaz has gone with for his entry, I think his yellow and red is just terrific! My favorite miniatures are his converted Scorchers, although this months Big Boss is in the running too!

What a challenge. I was suprised how tough I found it. Painting to a high standard for my skill level was quite draining mentally. It pushed my skill level and I feel I have become a better painter because of it.
The challenge got me to complete models I have kept meaning to paint but kept putting them of, so the challenge was a great way to focus and get them done.
Thank to Dennis for carrying on the challenge, amazing job.
Well done to all those who took part.
Roll on next yr.
May you paint stay thin and your brush hold its point.
Wachtmeister: I’m glad Richard joined the fun, if you don’t know he runs 2nd Edition gaming days through the 40k 2nd Edition Facebook group and I figured he’d be a perfect fit. I don’t mind being right, and I definitely was as his Dark Angels army looks terrific! I really like the robes on his characters, and his lone terminators armor. This force has the feel of a small command element making its way back to friendly lines. If this was a TV show I’d hate to be playing the role of an Assault Marine, you know they aren’t making it back to base!

Well what a ride and it’s been amazing !
Massive thank you to Dennis for hosting again true gent and loved every moment ! Without these challenges, I would do Little to no hobby so thank you again for keeping me involved.
So onto the slice this month was a bonus month for me and I’d like to introduce you to a tech priest from the dark mechanicus , he was meant to be accompanied by some chaos androids, but I run out of time, as always life just gets in the way.
Hope you guys like him and I can’t wait to see everyone’s full army shots as that’s what it’s all about.
Thank you to everybody involved keep everyone going on. The group chat is always a good part of this challenge.
Can’t wait to see you guys again on the next one!!!
Wachtmeister: I love how Shepherd has taken a modern miniature but converted and painted him so that he matches the rest of his army. I’m quite impressed by the gritty feel of his Iron Warriors. I think I’ve mentioned I’ve nominally started Iron Warriors for 30k and I have a few 2nd Edition Chaos Marines but if I haven’t I want to say Shepherd has inspired me to paint them up as Iron Warriors. I could even muli-purpose one of the Basilisk I have and use them for two games separated by thirty years! note: You might notice Shepherd didn’t paint the Chaos Androids in the first picture during this challenge. I went back and noticed they were not part of the official pledge, just part of his hoped for bonus so he did in fact finish this years challenge!

So here is the last, one Shadowseer, at 230 points, rounding out to 1000 total.
Not as happy with the diamond pattern on this one, but the red pops nicely, and I wish the lightning claw was 2nd Ed legal on areas of having to be a power fist.
The full 1000 points. A proper 2nd edition Harlequin riot of colour!
Thanks
Jim.
Wachtmeister: I can’t tell if Jim is a man of few words or I just can’t see them over the riot of colors his army picture has produced! I agree with Jim, the red on his Shadowseer is terrific and is very 2nd Edition Harlequin vibrant. This small but might force almost every color and pattern and I know it was not an easy job. Congratulations to Jim for gutting through one of the hardest paint jobs in the 40k realm!

I’ve only gone and bloody done it!
This month’s bonus, 10 more guardians and a warlock.
The warlock was part of the original pledge and was going to act as farseer, well he got usurped by another fancier farseer.
I felt bad for him, he’d been primed for much longer, so he got painted and will be good psychic support.
The guardians I’ll run as pirates so I can play them WYSIWYG, in hindsight I should have painted them more piratey but I just couldn’t resist painting more white…white light, white heat.
I’d definitely run out of steam by this point but pushed through and very glad I did.
Getting close to 2000pts of Eldar in 6 months!
Massive thanks to Wachtmeister for running the challenge and thanks to the other members for the support along the way, it’s been a great experience and my Dark Angels are now chomping at the bit!
My army –

Farseer – power sword, displacer, last pistol, hand flamer, blind grenades. 209pts.

Support—

Dreadnought, extra arm, scatter laser. 205pts.
Total points 1713
Wachtmeister: This is one of the most cohesive looking Eldar armies I have ever seen. Normally the aspect warriors make the force appear to be a kaleidoscope of color Justin has use a consistent color scheme across the board. That isn’t to say it looks uniform as each unit is different enough to show their different origins from across the Eldar realms but using the same green and red across the force really ties it together nicely. I think he is also the first person to have painted Craftworld Eldar, Pirates, and Exodites in the same challenge!

Final Month Blog Post:
The army was broken down as follows;
+ Characters +
Chaos Lord [191pts]: Army Commander, Axe of Khorne, Juggernaut of Khorne, Mark of Khorne, Mk 1 Plasma Pistol, Power Armour

Chaos Space Marine Dreadnought [220pts]: Combi-Bolter, Daemonic Possession (Add 25% points), Destroyer (Khorne Only), Mk 1 Heavy Plasma Gun, Power Scourge
Chaos Space Marine Rhino [50pts]
++ Total: [1,336pts] ++
The challenge is complete! From a rough job-lot of Chaos Marines to a fully painted force, this army has been resurrected with layers of red, brass, and devotion to the Blood God. Every model has its own story of salvage and rebirth—but the crown jewel is the towering classic metal Bloodthirster, finished just in time to lead them to war. It’s been a fun, gritty ride through nostalgia and chaos, and now they’re ready to wreak havoc on the battlefield. Skulls taken, paint pots emptied. Onward!
Wachtmeister: One of the great things about this challenge is seeing the different interpretations each of our artist challengers take on the same models. I love Mark’s Khornate nutters, including his Berserkers and his Bloodthirster for their dark red paint scheme, and I love MDixson’s same models for their bright red, more 2nd Edition take on the scheme. They are both excellent in their own way! They are also both quite similar as I would not want them placed in a sock and swung at me! Terrific job MDixson Khorne will be pleased!

Marshal Ferric Voltrane’s coat snapped in the diseased wind as he raised his plasma pistol. A cerulean charge pulsed within its containment field.
“Let’s see if you bleed, you bloated bastard,” he drawled through vox-grated static.
He fired. The shot slammed into the Great Unclean One’s shoulder, boiling flesh the colour of mouldy parchment. Maggot-pus sprayed in jets, sizzling on the ferrocrete where it fell. The daemon howled, jowls wobbling with both mirth and malice. Voltrane holstered his pistol and stalked forward, power axe alive with crackling coils of disruption.
Beside him, Lord Geronitan moved with the weight of judgment. His storm shield ignited with bursts of holy light as the daemon struck with its flail. Plague-wreathed skulls crashed down, shattering like artillery shells against his defense. With each blow parried, the conversion field flared, momentarily illuminating the daemon’s bulk in stark white light. Its pockmarked hide writhed with worms and its mouth drooled black contagion. Voltrane ducked low, axe biting into the daemon’s flabby calf. It bellowed and kicked, flinging him back. Geronitan deflected another swipe, stepped in close, then reeled as the daemon exhaled a cloud of miasma. Forced to fall back, they took cover behind the husk of a Leman Russ battle tank.
“We cannot get close enough to wound it deeply,” Geronitan said at last, voice even and cold. “Its body reknits with the blessing of filth.”
Voltrane’s voice crackled from behind his rebreather. “Well, Commander, I may just have an ace up my sleeve.” He pulled a cable from his chest, thick and sinuous, pulsing with artificial life. With one hand he rerouted the flow into his plasma pistol’s rear conduit.
“Marshal?”
“Borrowin’ a little juice from my own life support. Don’t worry, it’s mostly redundant.”
The weapon began to scream. Its vents boiled with energy, glow turning from bright blue to searing white. The air warped around it.
Voltrane’s vox sputtered. “Reckon I’ll need a mighty fine distraction.”
Geronitan stood without hesitation. He stepped from cover into the open. The daemon turned toward him, flail dragging behind it like a censer of ruin. Then Geronitan spoke and his voice thundered not with rage, but with grim, sorrowful command.
“Aldric Vael.”
The Great Unclean One froze.
“You… invoke a lie,” it gurgled uncertainly.
Geronitan advanced. “Grey Knight. Paladin of Titan. I hold you to your oaths, friend.”
The daemon shuddered. Boils ruptured along its torso. Its flail sagged to the ground.
“Foolish slave of the Corpse-God!” it roared suddenly, forced laughter curdling the air. “That is not my name. You have no power over me!”
But it could not move. Deep within the daemon’s rotted mass, something noble stirred; a spark of the man it had subsumed.
From behind, Voltrane emerged.
The plasma pistol howled, now glowing like a newborn star. Shadows stretched, recoiling from the growing light as though fleeing a coming judgment. Once-murky outlines hardened into jagged silhouettes, thrown long and stark across the broken ground. The hulking corpse of the Leman Russ cast a blade of darkness across the dust, quivering with the instability of the charged plasma. Even the warp-spawned clouds above seemed to recede in fear.
“Reckon this one’s for Aldric,” Voltrane muttered.
He fired. The shot was silent, but the world around it screamed.
The blast vaporised the daemon’s chest, the searing energy burning straight through its corrupted soul. Nurgle’s gift was undone in an instant of impossible purity. The daemon evaporated into luminous ash, dissolving on a wind that no longer stank of death.
Voltrane stood for a moment longer. Then he collapsed, axe clattering beside him. No words came from his speaker-grill. His eyes were dull. The rerouted power had consumed everything; his life, his logic core, his very presence. There was nothing left to give.
Geronitan knelt, laying a gauntlet on the Marshal’s chest.
“In the name of the Emperor,” he said softly, “and the Omnissiah, whose flame burned brightly in you, I commend your soul.”
Above them, the clouds parted.
Predator “Impossible Light” (Conversion Beamer, Lascannons, Reinforced Amour): 215
Rhino “Voltswagon” (Electrohull): 60
Total points: 275
Model count: 2
Grand total points: 2314
Total model count: 47
Wachtmeister: M4cr0Dutch has put together some very nice armies ever since the first iteration of the challenge, but I have to say I feel he has outdone himself with this one. He has nicely blended modern miniatures and 3D prints with the core of his army, his Grey Knights. Each model is a work of art from the blue silver, to what is to me the perfect shade of red. This is an army to be proud of and I hope it brings him as much joy on the battlefield as it has me looking at it!

Maddix, Orphidian 7th (Imperial Guard Black Codex – It’s 2nd Edition!!)
<<<Message begins>>>
“An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded”
<<Col. O. Hexham, 7th Orphidian CO, Private logs>>
Having dispatched Captain Chylton-Merriwether to distract the attention of the enemy, Inquisitor Krane advised us to deploy the might of the 1st Platoon in the neighbouring valley and to approach the enemy from the flank.
Accompanied by my full staff, we made planet-fall shortly afterwards and, under cover of darkness, advanced on the flank of the enemy positions as they struck at 2nd Platoon.
With the combined might of both platoons and true faith in The Emperor, the foe was vanquished and retreated into the local jungles. I have already assigned forces to reconnoiter and stalk the enemy before we locate their nest and exterminate them.
Inquisitor Krane remains with our forces, with his own goals undoubtedly in mind.
<<< Message ends>>>
Well, that’s almost the actual end of my Black Codex Imperial Guard force using my original models. Some extras have been added since I first started collecting these guys back in the 80’s, but I am VERY pleased to have these guys done now.
As a paint concept, I took the artwork from the Imperial Guard Plastic Box set from the RT/Early 2nd Era, but didn’t go for the brown pockets on the uniform as they never made much sense to me. The Squads have platoon colour badges with the Company Number on top – it USED to be 23 (shut up), but it is a LOT easier to draw a number 7 with a finepoint pen (also handy for tartan) with any regularity, hence they are now the Orphidian 7th. First Platoon has a yellow background, 2nd Platoon has a half red and half yellow background. IF I ever did another platoon, it would be in thirds, adding a blue section (and green for fourth). Each type of squad has a colour stripe on their helmet to represent what kind of squad it is – this is a holdover from both RT, Epic and the box art; Red for Tactical (and Veteran Tactical), Blue for Support, Yellow for Command, Green for Assault. Now, my Veterans also have camouflage lines on their fatigues to set them apart a little, as well as having some metal figures mixed in to make them more unique. I did enjoy sneaking in a few other metal bits, such as the old Rough Rider body in the second Assault Squad, as it’s always been a favourite.
The goal was to paint a platoon or so, with some leaders included, but as my bonus I’ve also painted up an entire second platoon!
Each platoon now consists of a squad of 10 Tactical Squad Imperial Guard, 10 Support Squad, 10 Assault Squad and 10 Veteran Tactical Squad AND a Command Squad of 5. There are three Commissars, 2 Tech Priests and a Colonel. And an Inquisitor, to make sure they’re not falling to Chaos or under the spell of the Alien.
I still need to get some old school vehicles, like a couple of Rhino’s and a Land Raider, but that’s for another day – the foot-sloggers are done!
The original entry was 3 Tactical Squads, 1 Support, 1 Assault, Command Squad, Colonel and a Commissar. This moved around a little as I went, mostly due to picking up a few extra’s to finish it off. This means that the bonus slice consists of:
Support Squad & 3 Missile Launchers
Veteran Squad of 10 & Lascannon
Assault Squad & Chainswords and laspistols, 2 Flamers
2 Tech Priests
574 Points, 32 Models (Bonus Slice)
Total Army:
Colonel & Plasma Gun
3 Commissars
Inquisitor
2 Tech Priests
2 Tactical Squads & Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter
2 Assault Squads & Chainswords, 2 Flamers
Support Squad & 5 Lascannons
Support Squad & 3 Missile Launchers
Veteran Squad of 10 & Lascannon, Grenade Launcher
Veteran Squad of 10 & Lascannon
2 Command Squads & 2 Flamers and.. assorted stuff
1,843 Points, 97 Models (WYSIWYG) (Total entries)
Frustratingly, I was also aiming to finish off some Howling Griffons to accompany them (same era models) and did manage to paint a Librarian, Terminator Captain, Techmarine, Servitor and a single Scout – not enough to really include (though they will be partnered with them in the future). This also means I haven’t submitted QUITE 2,000pts or 100 models. Dammit…
Maddix
p.s. I fully expect that The Wachtmeister will remove all of the beautiful rear shots that I have included with this submission.
Wachtmeister: I’ve teased Maddix quite a bit about his choice of models for this challenge but all kidding aside he has done an excellent job getting his army painted and ready for the battlefield. I’m not surprised at his output as I’ve seen him paint big numbers before but I still can’t help but be impressed!
P.S. I saw his p.s. and said to myself “aww screw it, I’ll include his rear shot photo” but then he didn’t actually attach one! I probably shouldn’t have written this as it will just encourage him “next challenge” but that’s a problem for someone to deal with in the future!
P.P.S He couldn’t help himself and so submitted a picture of the officers as the troops are likely to see them. Cheeky git!

Well, with Maddix bringing up the rear so to speak we are done with Wave 2, let’s meet back here next week for the final wave of the 40k 2nd Edition Challenge, Mark VI!
