This is it, the moment we have all been looking forward to, finished armies! I have been as excited as you to watch these entries roll in so lets get to it!

Total painted for challenge 2216 before wargear.
Total models painted 48.
This has been a very rewarding experience, it has rekindled the feelings I had building my forst army back in 2nd edition. I still have some models to add, I picked up a standard bearer, as well as painting up at least another 5 terminators, a whirlwind, and a razorback. Looking forward to next year and adding a chaos force. Lots of those models ready to go.
Thanks again and I will send a total army shot soon.
Wachtmeister: You’ll note Damien doesn’t have an entry this month, that’s because he managed to paint all 48 models and 2,216 points within the first five months. In fact he actually finished well more than his initial pledge in Month 4 and only added to it because he needed to paint something in five of the six months. I’m in awe at the amount of painting he got done for this challenge and I hope it brings him as much joy on the battlefield as I’ve had watching his progress!

“…grand ones, true ones ever leave the copestone to posterity. God keep me from ever completing anything”
Well with this final month of the challenge coming to an end, I can look back with pride on what I’ve achieved these past 6 months. The prospect of another failed attempt to paint Blood Angels to a standard I would be happy with has certainly put me off from starting this particular challenge since I got back into Oldhammer back in 2020. Recently, I saw a reminder on my phone that I was putting this force together a year ago, and also three years ago in various guises so getting it over the line has been something of an undertaking and I am glad that I was happy enough with how it went to flesh out my force somewhat more than I had initially pledged!
This month is bonus month time, and features some bits that I had worked on throughout the challenge but not finished in time to meet that months deadline, along with a few bits I have painted up this month. A full ten man Devastator Squad and a five man assault squad riding attack bikes. Plus three extra Terminators to add variety to the squad, in the form of a heavy flamer, one cyclone missile launcher and pair of lightning claws. This makes up the troop element of the month, but they are also joined by a Land Speeder, Land Raider Spartan (which is missing its sponsons as they are not finished but I could not resist leaving it out of the pic). The Land Raider will be used for Terminator Transport, and so I could not resist painting it up as an homage to the Epic Terminator Land raiders from back in 2nd Edition Space Marine. Then in terms of special characters, there is Tycho, Mephiston, Dante with bodyguard, Veteran Sgt. Cleutin and Apothecary Corbel! Otherwise known as a full house of BA special characters from the Codex! Finally, I also got my hands of one of the Sanguinius 3D prints to add to the force, who for gaming purposes I’ll take as a Captain with jump pack. Points wise,
Devastator Squad – Heavy Bolter, Lascannon, Heavy Plasma Gun, Missile Launcher 445 point
Bike Squadron – 3 bikes plus 1 attack bike, meta gun and power sword 265 points
3 Terminators, Cyclone, Lighting Claws and Heavy Flamer 269 points
Land Speeder 145 points
Land Raider 220 points
Dante with bodyguard 374 points
Veteran Sgt Cleutin 102 points
Chief Librarian Mephiston 295 points
Apothecary Corbulp 163 points
Brother-Captain Tycho 120 points
Sanguinius (Captain with jetpack) 106 points
Month 6 total- 32 and 2504 points(!!)
Cumulative total – 69 models and 4709 points
While I might take a little break from painting the red armour, there are still a few bits I want to add to this force, another 5 assault marines for a start, and a Razorback. So I will definitely be coming back to add to these guys. Now for a game or two!
As always, feel free to follow along with my progress and various other Oldhammer projects over on Instagram @ad80_herohammer. Thanks for reading!
Wachtmeister: I think Alex is trying to break my brain because I don’t see his initially pledged Dreadnought in the final picture, but I did go back and found it painted in a previous month. Whew, that was a close call! I’m rarely at a loss of words but Alex has managed to make this happen. As I was reading his list of what he had painted I was about to write him an email asking for the models and points he painted this month, not just the whole challenge. Then I realized that was exactly what he was doing! While it took Alex three years to finish his army he blew it out of the water by going above and beyond. Meeting and beating hobby goals is one of the things this challenge is all about, congratulations Alex!

Month 6 has come, and another challenge is done. This month I completed my final Hive Tyrant, as well as three bonus Tyranid Warriors, one with venom cannon, one with a barbed strangler, and one with a devourer. I also took a warrior I had finished in an earlier month and swapped out its death spitter for another barbed strangler. I was missing two warrior ‘stranglers previously, but after some experimentation was able to convert to Tyrant-style ‘stranglers to a warrior-style grip. I’m really happy with how they came out and how they help the force be a cohesive whole.
This challenge has been a blast! I initially set out with a goal of getting all eighteen of my metal warriors painted; I ended up painting all of them, plus an additional nine plastic ones! I also painted twenty genestealers, a Patriarch, two exocrines, two haruspexes and a lictor. At this point, I have one more screamer-killer, a zoanthrope, a lictor, two biovores and thirty hormagants to go and all my second edition Tyranids will be painted. I’m hoping to have them finished before next challenge, leaving me free to move on to finish an Eldar force I began for my first challenge.
All in all, Wachtmeister, this has been a great challenge! Thank you so much for hosting it. Seeing everyone’s paintjobs each month is a huge inspiration. It’s a lot of fun sharing the second edition models with others who appreciate them! Until next time, TJM out!

1x – Tyranid Warrior with Barbed Strangler – 79 points
1x – Tyranid Warrior with Devourer – 57 points
1x – Barbed Strangler Swapout – +18 points

Total Challenge:
2x – Hive Tyrants with Sharpened Claws and Toughened Exoskeletons – 358 points
3x – Tyranid Warriors with Lash Whip and Bonesword – 189 points
9x – Tyranid Warriors with Boneswords – 495 points

5x – Tyranid Warriors with Barbed Stranglers – 395 points
5x – Tyranid Warriors with Devourers – 285 points
2x – Ripper Swarms – 40 points
20x – Genestealers – 560 points
1x – Genestealer Patriarch – 72 points
2x – Haruspexes – 500 points
1x – Lictor – 96 points
2x – Exocrines – 330 points
Total Models: 57 Models
Total Points: 3,760 Points
Wachtmeister: TJM started with a plan to paint 18 models and ended up with 57, all without skimping on quality! This would be a scary sight to see across the table for sure, I don’t think I own enough lascannons or template weapons to even put a dent in this awesome looking force! I really enjoy the classic Hive Tyrant upgraded with wings, it could by my favorite model TJM created this whole challenge!

Beneath a sky choked with sickly green clouds, the Pestilent Ecstasy gathers, their rotting banners fluttering alongside silken standards dripping with perfumed ichor. Nurgle’s minions shamble forward, oozing pestilence, while Slaanesh’s devotees dance with frenzied grace, their laughter mingling with the drone of flies. United in blasphemous revelry, they march to spread decay and indulgence, a grotesque symphony of war.
***
My fifth and final slice consists of a unit of the 1997 Noise Marines! You don’t tend to see these minis a lot out in the wild, so it was great to finally get to work on them.
I decided to go with black armour and pink trim for that Emperor’s Children vibe. Using a very dark colour and a very bright colour together comes with some difficulties (if you make a mistake and get black paint on the pink you’re screwed!), but I managed to get through it without any major mishaps. It just took a long time!
Noise Marines cost 30 points per model and come in units of 3-5 (+ the option of having an Aspiring Champion). Any model can have a Sonic Blaster, while a single model may take the heavier Blastmaster for a whopping 45 points. One model in the squad may also take a Doom Siren. The Aspiring Champion can take Noise Marine weapons as well, so you could have two Blastmasters in your squad if you wanted to. They come with the Mark of Slaanesh (naturally) and the Psychic Cacophony rule which makes life harder for psykers within 16″!
I’m also including the photo of the finished army in all its glory! Behold the warband of Pestilent Ecstasy!
Thanks to all the Cowabungites for the moral support and inspiration on this awesome painting journey!

The Cacophonic Reavers*
5x Noise Marines (150), 3x Sonic Blaster (30), 2x Blastmaster (90) (270)
1x Aspiring Champion (30), Mark of Slaanesh (5), 1x Doom Siren (15), 1x Powerfist (10), 1x Chainsword (2) (62)
Total: 332 points
*This isn’t a strictly legal squad since you can’t have two Blastmasters, but I did it this way for the purpose of adding up the points.

Wachtmeister: These Noise Marines are simply sublime. I literally stared at them until my eyes hurt from looking at the screen. The color scheme is almost subdued for Slaanesh, however, they are almost all the more wild and vibrant because of it. Once again Ted has painted an army to be proud of, as always I have enjoyed his super crisp painting style and look forward to seeing more on his Instagram!

Well then everyone, the day of ascencion is here! Oh joy of joys, soon we will get to bask in the robust musk of our lord and saviour once more! Quick, grab your autogun and point it at any unbelievers – there are special faith-rounds that send those folk straight to the Emperor’s side! I’ll give you a tour around the place and introduce you to the rest of the glorious liberation effort \\*//
So, our initial pledge of thirty three models has swollen up to sixty one models, almost doubling what had initially been promised. Lots of good folk joined up in that time, wanting to help speed on his ascencion. We also saw six new purestrain brethren be birthed this month – praise be!
I thank you all for joining us on yet another year of the 2nd edition 40k Army Challenge and wanted to than the amazing Wachtmeister for his ongoing work in keeping our challenge going!

Thanks again!

Wachtmeister: Another six purestrains? Martin’s army is looking more and more like his native Australia than ever before! This is a terrific looking army and one Martin should be proud of especially since he has used models from a wide range of figures and eras. My favorite piece is the ad hoc Landraider made up of all sorts of random bits without looking like it’s been made up of random bits!

So, the final month!
This month I had left myself a Chaos Dreadnought to finish off my Khorne army. Leaving it until last wasn’t an accident, I had a lot of plans for it and worked on some pieces / ideas during the other months. The 2nd Ed. Chaos Dreadnought is one of my all time favourite GW models, and I already have two of them painted up in black for my Chaos Space Marines. When I did these a few years ago I modeled and 3D printed an extension kit made up of some ankles and a midriff section that really turn the model into a towering monster.
Beyond doing another height boost, for this one I knew I wanted to add twin close combat weapons to make Khorne especially happy. Instead of carving up and trying to flip one of the existing metal close combat weapons, I decided to model some huge claws that hopefully fit somewhat with the original model. I added a new helmet because I didn’t want it to be the same as my 2 other metal dreads, and on top of that I modeled a havoc launcher to add to the height some more and make sure it can at least shoot a little bit.
After a lot of revisions of the 3D parts, the paintjob for the body was done in a weekend, leaving me with just my nemesis as the last job; a hand painted banner. After a few false starts I went with a big milliput banner that I found easier to paint on than card, and it turned out okay – resorting to my tried and true method of using lots of dots and dashes to add texture that distract a bit from the dodgy freehanding. When I stuck it on the Dread, the banner was just a bit too big though, kind of overshadowing the rest of the model. However I realised it happily fitted nicely into the arms of the unfinished icon / banner Bloodletter from my first month though – solving that problem for me. After some more painful freehand and dots and dashes, I managed to come up with something a better size to size atop the Dread, and that was that!
Seeing the army crammed together for the final shot, it somehow looks quite small – but it really was a ton of work (and fun) to do over the months, and I’m super happy overall with army I’m left with. I want to say a massive thanks to Wachtmeister who is a complete nutter for running the challenge and even also entering into it himself. It’s very motivating to be part of, and see everyone else’s awesome armies taking shape as the months go on. Thanks all!
————————————————–
Points painted this month:
Chaos Dreadnought, 2x Power Fist, Havoc Missile Launcher, 200 points
Wachtmeister: Blood for the blood god, Skulls for the Throne of Khorne! <Ahem> Sorry for that. I just couldn’t help myself after looking at Mark’s terrific Khornate force! I’m not sure what Mark is talking about “dodgy freehand” on his banners, I think they look terrific. This is a really cohesive force and looks super sharp all together. Speaking of sharp (I swear I didn’t work that segue in on purpose) those claws on the Dreadnought look ferocious. I really like the up scaling of this classic model, between that, the new helmet, and the missile launcher it looks like a very different model but still maintains it’s 2nd Edition vibes. Speaking of the missile launcher you can tell this beast has just landed in theater as it still hasn’t fired its missiles. I’d figure a Khorne Dreadnought would fire its missiles within seconds of hitting the field!

Wachtmeister: Brawlerguts also finished his entry in month five so does not have a monthly entry. Or does he? Read on….
And here there are – 1000 points of original Necrons. Phew. All done. And how would I summarise my experience? Here are my three key takeaways:
- A deadline is the best motivator – usually for me, this deadline is provided by a game in the diary. Our group likes to plan games months in advance (kids, partners, work, family etc means this is the only way!). And we have a strict ‘painted models only’ rule. We use upcoming games as an excuse to paint something new. With that deadline on the horizon – and our neurotic rule about only painted minis being allowed on the tabletop – it helps us finish armies. The challenge added another layer to that. I’ve painted these Necrons without having a game planned for them. And I’ve done that alongside other projects. That’s fairly unheard of for me. I usually focus on the next game and getting my army ready for that.
- A simple scheme is easy, but boring – I painted these to match the classic original look from White Dwarf back in the day. I’m pleased how they look and they hit all the right nostalgia buttons. However, for all the benefits of the scheme being ‘easy,’ it was actually a bit of a grind. And that ironically made the job a bit harder. Opting for something a bit more jazzy might have brought a bit more joy to the process and so wouldn’t have been ‘harder’ at all. Funny logic right? But something I’ll remember for next time.
- Painting is my happy place, but it’s not the same for everyone – Despite what I just said above, painting brings me peace. Even these Necrons. It relaxes me. It’s my zen. I switch off. It’s my go-to hobby of choice. I don’t play computer games for example, like a LOT of us wargamers seem to do – I get too wired if I do and they’re not for me. So any free time I have when I want to relax, I paint. The biggest benefit of the challenge for me was the motivation and camaraderie it brought. Sharing made it all much more social and exciting. There’s something special about seeing everyone’s army grow. So the challenge gave focus and purpose to WHAT I paint, but not really HOW MUCH I paint. After seeing all the stats and updates about everyone’s struggles, mulligans and sanction redactuses (?) it surprised me and opened my eyes a little. We all get derailed by life from time to time. When this happens for me, painting helps get me back on track. It provides sanctuary. But now I see that’s not the case for everyone. Some clearly saw it as an added pressure that they needed to drop. And that’s ok. And it’s good learning for me.
It’s been a journey. But before I sign off, I have a secret confession to make.
I realised early doors that perhaps I’d chosen a bit of basic army and basic colour scheme to paint. I needed something more juicy to get my teeth into and keep my interest in Warhammer 40,000 2nd edition.
Enter; The Tyranids.

As a spicy bit of bonus content, I’d like to share with you pictures of 48 Tyranid models, weighing-in at a healthy 1352 points. These were ALL bought, built, and painted between February and June this year. Alongside the Necrons.
I’m immensely proud of this. And they were seriously FUN to paint, mainly using GW Contrast paints, washes, and a clever bit of drybrushing. It’s also important to me that I show you I can sort of actually paint too haha! (which is hard to see after only sharing Necrons!). You’ll see I’ve also tried to colour match to the original Codex where possible.
I’ve already had three games with this army in June in celebration of the achievement (including with other members of challenge). Highlights include:
- a Chimera running over five Termigants and two Genestealers reminding me of the APC scene in Aliens (all failing initiative tests on a 6!)
- Mr Hive Tyrant killing said Chimera in combat but using his Venom Cannon (super cool rule!) and, killing all on board
- And the same Mr Hive Tyrant thinking he’s invincible while fighting a Blood Thirster and surviving the first round… only to get promptly exterminated and squished by a cloven, Daemonic hoof in the second round after a string of fumbles
Epic scenes! The list:
Individuals
- 1 x Hive Tyrant (164), with Venom Cannon (40), Lash Whip (9), and Bone Sword (6) = 219
- 1 x Lictor = 96
- 1 x Lictor = 96
Broods
- 2 x Tyranid Warriors with Boner Swords = 110
- 17 x Termagants =102
- 15 x Genestealers (140) = 420
Support
- 1 x Carnifex = 199
- 1 x Bivore = 20
- 9 Spore Mines = 90
Total = 1352
Well done to all my fellow painting challengers! And thank you to Watchmeister for organising and running the entire show!
Wachtmeister: So, umm, uhh, I know I already used the “loss for words” line this month but I have to say I was just awestruck staring at Brawlerguts secret second army. I have been enjoying his Necrons and am glad to see the army finished, especially since it is the first finished Necron army in 2nd Edition history, or at least as I remember it! Brawlerguts is right though, the Necron army apparently didn’t show off his painting skills as well as his secret Tyranid army does. Take a close look at those gribblies and you’ll swear they were pulled right out of the 2nd Edition Codex! Congratulations Brawlerguts for being the first person to finish two different armies during the challenge! I’m totally adding these numbers into our final points and model count!

I made it across the finish line! I am super happy I managed to get everything that I pledged finished. The Boarboys were cutting it a little close for comfort though. The challenge has been a ton of fun and it has been great seeing everyone’s progress on their armies over the last half a year. It is a pleasure seeing all the inspiring work and has been great motivation to keep going. I can now happily say I have the solid basis for the 2nded Ork army I never had the pleasure of owning back when I first started the hobby. It contains most of the units I love for their wacky nature, or that got purged in later editions (like the lovely boarboys). I still absolutely adore the Trollet sculpts, although some Mkojiro and Red Nebular models are in there too. I didn’t get as far into the bonus models as I would have liked, topping some of my squads up, adding some characters and another squad. Depending how I go they may form the basis of my pledge in next year’s challenge!
I want to say a big thanks to Wachmeister for running the challenge, and to Dr The Viking for starting them. I’m looking forward to joining in many more!

Wachtmeister: Many more challenges? Did Jon McMaster put you up to this Georg? Either way this is a terrific looking army and one you should be proud of. Despite not having any actual 2nd Edition models it still very much has the look and feel of a 2nd Edition Ork army from the madcap expressions on the models faces to the awesome (and bright) paint job. I hope it manages to have many a victorious Waaagh for you. Of course all Ork battles are Ork wins after all because “Orkses never lose a battle. If we win, we win, if we die, we die fightin so it don’t count. If we runs for it, we don’t die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!”

So here is the finished army photo – six months of blood, sweat and paint have finally coalesced into something more impressive than the sum of its parts!
This month I’ve managed to finish off the final five of the Tactical Marines to complete the squad. This includes a couple of back banners for the sergeant and potential 2nd combat squad leader – which I really do think are essential for any true 2nd Ed Space Marines! I’ve also finished the Imperial Guard squad – armed with a heavy bolter and plasma gun as the special weapons. I do love the Vostroyan models – I know they’re not technically 2nd Ed but I still think the aesthetic is pretty similar. I’ve tried to make these look a bit like steampunk British Guardsmen, so they’ve got blue water bottles and black bearskins.
Total Points – Month 6
Space Marine Tactical Combat Squad (with heavy plasma gun and power axe for the sergeant) = 197 points
Imperial Guard squad (including heavy bolter, plasma gun and sergeant with chainsword and bolt pistol) = 120 points
I did make an attempt at building a big terrain piece – which was a 4′ x 2′ board with trenches and a bunker. However, the weather has got far too hot over the last few days and I just can’t quite finish it or reorganise everything to actually photograph it with the army on it! As I’ve got more things that I want to add, particularly to the Salamanders, over the rest of the year I’ll keep working on it and I’m sure it will get properly finished at some point soon.
Massive thanks to you for running the challenge – I’m hugely grateful for all the time and effort you’ve put in organising it and putting out all the updates. Being part of it has been great motivation to get things painted and at the end I’ve got an army I can put on the table for some games!
Thanks again,
Tom
Wachtmeister: Once again Tom has killed it with his super clean painting style. While Tom’s army is nominally Sisters of Battle he has done a wonderful job of bringing in backup from across the Emperors realm and he managed to make them look like a coherent force despite the widely different color schemes. He is right the Vostroyan’s are not 2nd Edition but they have the 2nd Edition vibe. I really do need to remind myself I don’t need more guard, which is especially hard to do after seeing Toms excellent work!

Wachtmeister: Sam finished his entry in month five so does not have a monthly entry picture.

I managed to finish it all and I’m rather pleased with the results. Perhaps next year I’ll be able to add some more…
And to close, an apt quote from Dawn of War:
“For those who seek perfection, there can be no rest on this side of the grave.”
— Sam
———— Transmission Ends ————
Wachtmeister: Over the last six challenges I’ve had to use the axiom “perfection is the enemy of good”, I like Sam’s version better. On more than one occasion I’ve had to submit an entry and then go back and finish it more to my standard than it was submitted. In fact this might be the first challenge I haven’t had to do that, although at the time of this writing I’m not actually done yet so I might have jinxed myself. But enough about me, how about Sam? His army truly does look like a 2nd Edition Army box set with his rich blues, bright reds, and glorious goblin green bases. He might not seek perfection but he came pretty darn close to finding it!
With that we wrap up Wave 1 of our finished entries for Mark VI of the 40k 2nd Edition Challenge. Join us next week as we get into Wave 2!
