Warhammer The Old World Battle Report: Nurgle Daemons versus Dwarven Mountain Holds

In this battle report my Nurgle Daemons took to the field against my buddies Dwarfs. In the pictures you’ll see two Dwarf characters on a larger base with two dogs, those are his characters on their thrones. I didn’t get a list for the Dwarfs so we will go right into the battle report!

The opening deployment. Yes, the Dwarfs happened to have a hill in their deployment zone, and yes they chose to deploy within 2 feet of their table edge. Hey, it’s a Dwarf thing, if it works it works!

The Daemons started by moving across the board. It was going to be difficult to get all the Plaguebearers into the fight with the terrain! The Daemon Prince was able to case the Pillar of Fire to attempt to block some line of sight against the Great Unclean One. Besides that nothing else was in range.

The Dwarf turn was a lot more interesting. The Rune Lord was able to get a few defensive spells up, the Dwarf shooting took out three Plaguebearers and the Furies flew to close to the sun by about 2 inches and were blasted with the power of the Anvil with only one of the foul creatures surviving the attack!

The Plague Flies charged the unit of Iron Drakes while the rest of the army advanced. The Daemon Prince was out of range and so his magic was mostly ineffective. The Plague Flies managed to win the combat but only killed one of the well armored stunties forcing them back 2 inches. The Flies opted to follow up rather than facing the shooting might of the vengeful Dwarfs!

The Dwarfs didn’t get much accomplished this turn with their shooting and the flies managed to kill two more Dwarfs. This time, as it was the Daemon turn next, they opted not to reengage deciding to try and move against the healthy unit of Iron Drakes to stop more shooting.

The Rot Flies did what they planned to do and charged the healthy unit of Iron Drakes while the rest of the army continued to advance. The Rot Flies took a wound but due to their standard and musician won the combat and pushed the Iron Drakes back.

In their turn the Dwarfs managed to cause some casualties on the Plaguebearers and put two wounds on the Beasts of Nurgle. The Plague Flies won the combat again, this time the surviving Iron Drakes fell back in good order behind the safety of their ranked up brethren with the Flies overrunning into the block in front of them.

The Daemons launched charges across the front with the Great Unclean One contacting the unit of Longbeards and their king, the Beasts contacting the last three Iron Drakes from the first unit the Flies engaged and the Nurglings made contact with the Rangers. The lucky little gits took four wounds but managed to save all of them on their ward saves! Because of this bit of luck the combat between the Nurglings and the Rangers ended up as a tie as both units caused one wound a piece! The Beasts of Nurgle ate their way through the remaining Iron Drakes and overran into the Dwarfs just before the Great Unclean One started his fight. The Beasts of Nurgle lost one of their own to the King while the Great Unclean One and the other Beastsmanaged to put eight wounds on the unit! The followers of Nurgle did not outnumber the Dwarfs though so they only fell back in good order!

In the Dwarf turn the Flies killed a few of the Longbeards they were facing but lost the combat due to static resolution and lost a model due to demonic instability. The Rune Lord was able to get some protective buffs off on the kings unit which ultimately saved at least five Dwarfs from death and prevented the Daemons from finishing off the unit and auto routing the Dwarf Lord! Bad time to not dispel!

The Great Unclean One and the Daemon Prince worked their way to the back of the Kings unit to try and get a rear charge while the Longbeards finished off the Flies in a flurry of blows. They were then able to overrun and hit the smaller Plaguebearer unit.

The Lord and his unit charged the Plague Bearer unit that had finally made it into position. The Dwarf Iron Drakes were able to take advantage of being drilled and turned and walked towards the Daemon Prince. Swearing a mighty Dwarfish oath the champion took aim at the Prince and opened fire with his torpedo which hit, wounded, and penetrated the 4+ ward save. With a breath the multiple wound roll was made killing the Prince outright! Meanwhile the Dwarfs and their Battle Standard Bearer dropped the unit they were fighting to just the champion, pushed it back and joined the combat the Lord and his unit were engaged in. The two units proved too much for the Plaguebeaers and dropped them down to only four models! Meanwhile the less than epic struggle between the Nurglings and the Rangers continued on with another Dwarf dying to stomp another wound off the Nurglings.

With this the store closed so we didn’t get to finish our 6th turn. Still, looking at the board it was fairly obvious this was a Dwarf victory, and with another turn the victory would have been even more complete. Without the Demon Prince to add his magi and combat might, and the Great Unclean One looking in the wrong direction the Dwarfs were going to easily mop up the remaining Plaguebearers and probably the Herald on his palanquin. I think this was going to be the turn the Nurglings finally finished the Rangers, but only because it’s my blog and I need to end on a high note for myself!

I feel I was really defeated on the turn when the Dwarf magic saved 5+ wounds to the Kings unit. If I killed that unit off things probably would have ended much differently! Oh well, that’s why we roll the dice!
