40k 2nd Edition Challenge Mark VI – Month 2, Wave 3

With this batch of entries we are already through month two! The Inquisition has had to call Sanction Redactus on a few contestants, but we will get to that at the end!

So, 2nd months entry, and rechecking my points values, I’m at 449 points with this entry.

Wanted to do the face like this as a test for my Avatar in due course, that’s going to look good…

Wachtmeister: I love the diamond patter on this Death Jesters leg, and I agree with Jim, a full Avatar in the style of this guys mask is going to look terrific!

Wow, February already! This month, it’s Kharn the Betrayer! I was intending to keep Kharn as a little treat or a backup for later on, in case I didn’t have enough time to finish something larger. However I decided to paint him up this month as I’ve been modeling the Terminators and Berzerkers together, and it didn’t leave me much time for painting either squad up. I struggled a bit with this one, feeling like some of the details were maybe a little bit eroded from a vigorous paint stripping perhaps, but that’s probably all in my head. I wish I could figure out how to photograph the gold and the shiny blood splats better, but there we go. Next month will probably be the Terminators. They’re going to be Khornified and somewhat enlarged, and hopefully pretty impressive. On to next month! Cheers!

Points Painted:

Kharn the Betrayer – 217 points

Wachtmeister: I’ve been anxiously awaiting Mark’s paintjob on Kharn ever since I saw his list and he did not let me down! I love the shading on the helmet and Gorechild looks terrific with all the blood splatter!  Blood for the Blood god!  Skulls for the Throne of Khorne!

Rather better progress made this month – I’ve finished some actual models related to the army I’m supposed to be painting!!!

So, the main focus of the month was a squad of Sisters of Battle – maxed out to a total of 7 models. Maybe I’ve been influenced by the amount of time I’ve been painting Salamanders recently, but this squad is fitted out with a double flamer combo – one heavy flamer and one regular version. Painting the white armour was pretty quick, slightly tweaked the recipe from last month by using thinned AK white rather than a white ink to do the volumetric highlights – the ink was very glossy which made reading the armour harder than it needed to be. Thinning down the AK white gives a more matte finish, which is easier to work with.

I did finish these in good time, so I managed to go back to the bonus models I started in month 1 and finish them off. So we have a combat squad of Assault Marines – Salamanders again – with mostly chainswords and bolt pistols. I’ve probably used too thick masking tape when doing the stripes on the chainswords, but I can live with it. Note to self to use 2mm in future!

Total Points – Month 2

Battle Sisters (bolters) x 5 = 140 points

Additional Sister with flamer = 32 points

Additional Sister with heavy flamer = 48 points

Power sword (for the Sister Superior) = 6 points

Space Marine Assault Combat Squad = 150 points

Jump packs = 25 points

Chainswords x 4 = 8 points

Power sword x 1 = 6 points

Total points = 415 points

I think this is the largest number of models I’ve ever finished in a 40k2ndac month – admittedly the Marines were started last month, but even so its been fun to actually get through a lot of 40k scale models in a reasonable amount of time! 5 x Seraphim for March, might see if I can squeeze in a few more bonus marines again!

Thanks

Wachtmeister: Wow.  Tom’s colors are so bright, crisp and clean they are simply stunning!  I love that Tom is going with the more modern Nocturne skin tone for his models, they look really good with the bright armor of both the Salamanders and the Sisters of Battle.

This month started as a bit of a scrabble as I lost my tanks moving my office. So I tried to fill the gap with the Psyker and Preacher. Original plan was a half squad of guardsmen plus a Basilisk.

I was probably most excited to do the Psyker as I re-purchased it after I cut my one up for a conversion when I was a kid. I tried to make him stand out from the darker convicts and Arbite inspired troops. Did he end up a bit too much like Saruman… Maybe! is that a bad thing??

The Preacher got the drab colours of the convict Penal Legionaries. Seemed to work out OK.

The Prison Wardens, which are the Van Saar troopers also turned out well, keeping to dark dark grey jump suits and the yellow/red guns and accents. It really helps that they come with the same stripes and ribing as the Adeptus Arbite models.

Next month has to be a tank I think.

PRIMARIES PSYKER CHAMPION (69pts)

Psychic Hood 25 PTS.

Force Rod 15pts

Laspistol 1 pt

-110 pts

5 x IMPERIAL GUARD Troopers (50 points) + flamer 7 points

IMPERIAL PREACHER 35 points

202 points TOTAL

7 models TOTAL

Wachtmeister: This is a great little command group that fits the theme of Vectis’ Penal Legion.  I’ve had two copies of that Psyker kicking around for a while, one has had some paint on it since probably the second challenge.  I don’t think Saruman in spppaaaccceeee is a bad thing at all!

So this month iv been working on this Epic old tank ! The mighty Basilisk ! Coming in at 175pts

As it stands this is the only Basilisk in my Iron warrior collection (iv always preferred a predator)

As always once iv taken the photos iv seen bits I’d like to back over but im happy with the end result.

Iv also made a few more smoke markers to go with it .

Can’t wait to see all then
Regards

Wachtmeister: I love seeing guard tanks painted up for Space Marines, and nothing fits the Iron Warriors better than a Basilisk!  I plan on doing the same thing for my 30k Iron Warriors if I ever get around to actually playing the game!  Shepherd’s smoke markers are terrific too and will really help liven up the battlefield!

Hi!

This month I have painted a dreadnough armed with Power Claw with built-in Storm Bolter (15) and Multi-Melta (65): 195 points and 180 grams of glorious metal (yes, I have weighed it). It can be used to destroy the enemy tanks, or to throw it to your opponent in case he uses a vortex grenade. The damage in both cases will be high!

It is very satisfying to finally see it with a painting according to what it deserves.I remember the joy when my parents bought it back in the days (1998?), applying a fast red coat to be able to play with it. I still have to look for the banner pole, it should be somewhere…

Cheers!

Jaime.

Wachtmeister: I hope Jon McMaster hasn’t read this far down the post, I don’t want him getting any ideas about throwing heavy things at me after I smoke his Terminator Librarian with a well placed Vortex grenade from my Catachan Captain!  I hope Jaime isn’t in a spot where he feels throwing this wonderful model is needed, it might be effective but it looks too cool to throw!

This month sees the realization of a second edition 40k dream of mine.

When creating army lists for my weekly wargaming nights in the 90s, I always wanted to mix up my lists depending on my opponent’s army, or just change things to amuse my friends. What always bothered me was that I would have to proxy models that I didn’t have. In particular, special and heavy weapon models were a bit of a pain to afford (in terms of actual money). This max-sized mob of Ork Nobz bids those days farewell. I now have a huge assortment of Ork heavy weapons finally painted up. 15 of them to be precise. Now I can swap out the weapons in the mobs to suit my tastes at the moment. Or in true Orky fashion just get looney and field this gigantic points sink Nobz mob! I also managed to paint up 2 bonus models this month (2 orks with flamers). Full disclosure: I absolutely did NOT want to paint them, but I had to. I mean, I’m painting 15 heavy weapon Orks, why would I just ignore those 2 extra guys in the lead pile. This challenge is turning out to be a real slog, but the moment I array each slice for their monthly photo I feel like I can make it one more month.

Blood Axe Nobz Mob: 15 Nobz (15 assorted heavy weapons) 634 points

Bonus models: 2 Ork boys (with flamers) 38 points

Total points: 672

Total models: 17

And you can find many more photos of my miniatures and hobbies on my blog at https://giantpygmy.com

Wachtmeister: As always seeing what PygmyHippo painted is one of the highlights of the month.  If he brings this army to face me I only pray I have enough templates because even the Orks will have to hit with this many heavy weapons in a unit!

Greetings!

It is really awesome to see all of these excellent forces develop. After weeks of steady painting I have been pushing the entire force to completion.  With just a few days left in the  month I have completed this one squad… I think.

Lots of time was spent testing colors and thinking about what is the right lens color or wax for purity seals.  After all that thinking I settled on some colors that I am fairly happy with.

The unit weighs in a 218 points of red fury.  I can’t wait to see them on the tabletop soon.

Wachtmeister: I have to say this is a terrific entry.  I spent a lot of time just looking at that sweet red armor, and how well it goes with the black and white tabards.  It’s terrific to see so many unique Sisters of Battle color schemes in this challenge.  I’m never one for going out of the box for my own stuff but I always appreciate when someone more creative than me does!

Cursed February and its lack of days! You’d think after being around this long it wouldn’t sneak up on me like some crafty Kommandos. This month I am a little behind where I was hoping to be. I did still manage to get a Badmoon Mob finished, which is the bulk of what I had hoped to get done. I’m hoping next week to get a bit more on top of the Orks. My plan is to add a few more units that didn’t fit in the initial pledge. At a bare minimum I’d like to add a Shokk Attack gun, dreadnought, some Skarboys, Death skulls, and a weird boy.

Models done in February: 8

8 Badmoon Boys 144pts, 2 Plasmaguns, 2 Autocannons

Wachtmeister: Another contestant going heavy on yellow and coming out with terrific results!  These 3D printed Orks look like they were born out of the 2nd Edition era, and Georg’s paint job only makes them look better!

Here we go again, all! Another month, another round of painting. It’s crazy to think that we are already a third of the way through this challenge.

This month, I have redeemed myself. Six Tyranid warriors painted, along with two squigs. These guys were such a blast to paint and to assemble. While preparing for this challenge, I saw I had something like eighteen right handed boneswords and only six left handed ones. To make up the difference, I ended up chopping six or so of the right-handed ones, swapping the orientation of the blade and wrist to make them left-handed. I also used some blue-tac and superglue to make a homemade greenstuff blend, which let me do some gap filling and minor alteration of the shoulders to give some different arm positions. Additionally, I took a few extra Hive Tyrant arms and cut off the shoulder pauldron. This let the arm fit the Tyranid Warrior torso and gave me a few extra swords to swap up the look. I’m really enjoying painting these warriors. There is so much variety you can do with them!

Then, the squigs. These guys are the predecessors to the 2e Ripper Swarms and consist of a “Slasher Grabber” and Spider Squig. You can really see the nascent Ork connection with the Slasher Grabber. My kids were very confused about these guys’ connection to the rest of the Tyranid army!

Finally, two big bonus models. I have a 10th edition tournament coming up in March and wanted to get a little more firepower. So, I painted up two more Exocrines that have been sitting around the hobby room. I really like the little details on these models. They take the paint so well and really work as centerpieces for the army. Last year I won a best painted trophy for taking the hivefleet to the tourney – hoping to get that again this year!

Anyway, there may be a few more monsters coming next month, along with more of my pledge. Till then – keep painting and good luck!

Total Models – 10

Total Points – 700

2 Exocrines – 330

6 Tyranid Warriors with Boneswords – 330

2 Ripper Swarms – 40

Wachtmeister: Now this is the TJM we’ve all come to know and fear!  A lot of super large gribblies painted to a high standard.  Much like his kids I’m a bit confused.  What kind of madman just so happens to have two “more” Exocrines “sitting around the hobby room”?  If TJM has discovered a time machine I have a shopping list I’d like to give him!

Hello everyone:
This month I finally finished my terminators from the beginning of this challenge and that have caused me so many problems. It has been a challenge, painting them to the ‘Eavy Metal style of their time but I am really happy with the results. The terminators have always been one of the most iconic Space Marine units and among the best 2nd Edition models. The Indomitus model is, no doubt, one of the most powerful weapons platform that the Imperium can deploy… and its cost of 400 points are worth it! My plans for next month are the Chaplain and starting with one of the Tactical Squads. I hope you like them and sorry for writing so short an update.
Thanks a lot!

Wachtmeister: Manu almost got lost in the warp, I’m glad his Navigator was able to get him to real space safely!  Manu spent two months getting these guys done and they certainly look good for the extra effort!  They look ready to storm an Ork line or board a Space Hulk or fight in any myriad of battlefields!

I’m glad I didn’t finish these guys early last month, I needed the lead in time for this month to finish on time!  That said I did get a head start on two other units in February so I’m already in good shape for March! I don’t have much to say beyond this, 40 contestants is tiring!

These three mortars cost 120 points but the fear they strike in Jon makes them worth many times their points to me!

Oh, and I finally got an Instagram page so check it out! https://www.instagram.com/wachtmeisters_patrol

Mulligan

Hello brave readers of the challenge.  My minis for this month are still mired in wet blending blue grey hell.  As a result, I am cashing in my mulligan for this month and look forward to returning next month with a great looking finished product.  Looking at all of last month’s entries was very impressive.  Congratulations to all the many participants on painting tons of great miniatures and thanks to Wachtmeister for coordinating the largest challenge yet.

Wachtmeister: Jon may be down, but he’s not out.  Looks like he has a good start on the March entry, I look forward to his finished product!

Sanction Redactus

Hi Dennis,

I’m very sorry, but I would like to withdraw from the challenge. In February, my work asked me to start a Graduate Certificate, which they will pay for. I hadn’t planned to do any study in 2025, but since they are paying for it, I feel I must do it. Between full-time work and having young kids, doing this study in my free time has and will continue to impact my hobby time and won’t allow me to complete the challenge.

I will still closely monitor the challenge, and I look forward to seeing everyone’s progress. I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of attempting the challenge in a future year when I have more time.

Very sorry about that. Everyone seems so amazing, and I’m really happy to have found a group that is passionate about 2nd ed 40K.

 Thanks,

-Marty Von Carstein

Wachtmeister: Having been through a graduate program paid for by work I totally understand where Marty is coming from. He’s a way better employee than I was to focus on his degree instead of toy soldiers and I wish him the best of luck!

Wachtmeister: KC fell to the Space Wolves Curse, and Hamsfan needed to drop out as well. I hope one day they paint their dream armies!

With one mulligan and three Sanction Redactus Month 2 comes to a close. Tune back here next week for a round up of the Month 2 data!
