Elven Civil War – A The Old World Battle Report

My buddy Manteuffel over on Wargaming from the Balcony participated in this battle on the Wood Elf side so if you’d like some more pictures and another perspective you should check out his report! We had five players show up and we were getting bored of pushing Dwarfs and Nurgle Daemons so we played a multiplayer game with three of us taking the High Elves, and two taking Wood Elves. I was on the High Elf side, my buddy Manteuffel on the Wood Elf side. I didn’t get the army lists this time so we’ll have to make do with pretty pictures to see what the lists contained!

The starting battle line.

The Wood Elves got the first turn and the Lord took the chance to move to the center of the table to better threaten the High Elven characters. The Wood Elven shooting was overall ineffective, except the sylvan archers did manage to kill the High Elf Bolt Thrower with their poisoned arrows! The Wood Elf mage grew a forest to limit the High Elves options for their fast movers on the flank.

The High Elves quickly realized the Wood Elves were not going to come to them so they began a general advance. Magic and shooting was of limited value, although it was able to whittle down the Wild Riders!

The Lord on Dragon flew towards the center of the board, while his archers managed to kill a Silver Helm from the unit in the center of the table with the assistance of the Plague of Rust. Meanwhile the Wild Riders charged the Reavers who after standing and shooting dropped the unit down to one rider, which was promptly cut down by the hero in the unit! The Glade Riders on the flank put three wounds on the chariot approaching them.

In combat the Wardancers charged one of the Lion Chariots and pushed it back without being able to fully destroy it.

The High Elves on the left flank continued to advance on their bow armed torturer’s, and the Griffon and his Lord charged the Treeman. The wardancers finished off the chariot they were fighting and overran into the Silver Helms, losing two of their number due to skirmishers not being able to make it to the second combat rank. The Elven chariot had a lucky turn of shooting and shot down two Glade Riders. The Treeman couldn’t make a save and lost the combat, but due to his stubbborn nature only feel back in good order. The Griffon naturally followed up! The Silver Helms were quickly cut down by the Wardancers.

The Wood Elf mage moved out of the woods to get away from the Griffon, the Dragon charged the High Elf mage on chariot and the archers shot at the advancing Swordmasters who finally lost two of their number after cutting arrows down in flight all game with their 6+ ward!

The Wood Elf Dragon charged the Mage on Lion Chariot and pushed it back, while the Griffon finally felled the Treeman.

In what would be the last High Elf turn the eagle charged the scouts and the Griffon tried charging the Wood Elf mage who fled and rolled more than enough to get away. The Griffon opted to redirect into the archers. The Eagle fight was a draw, the Griffon pushed back the archers, and the High Elves put two wounds on the Wood Elf mage!

In the final Wood Elf turn the Dragon managed to finish off the High Elf mage on his chariot and the surviving archers ran from the Griffon after their champion heroically gave his life, and the Griffon decided not to pursue.

With this we ran out of time and could not get to turn six. It was looking like the Wood Elves would have won the game, however, it would have required the last turn to really determine what happened. If the Dragon charged the Griffon and the Griffon lived, and the High Elves were able to put the last wound on the mage it probably would have ended up a tie, but they probably needed both things to go right for them to tie it up. One of my teammates probably hadn’t played Warhammer in twenty years and he had a good time which made the whole night worth it. I’m not used to having so much mobility and being so fragile, I’ll need to get back to my plodding high toughness Nurgle army! I have always wanted a High Elf army of my own though. It was my first Warhammer army after all….
