An Old World Battle Report – Nurgle Daemons v Wood Elves

The foul Daemons of Nurgle invade the forests of Athel Loren. Can the Wood Elves through them back? Let’s see if we can find out! To keep the game simple we didn’t use any scenarios and just fought a pitched battle.

The Daemon battle line. The Nurgle swarms were set up on the far left of the Daemon line, outside of the picture.

The Wood Elves took a much wider line of battle, extending from almost one side of the table to the other.

The deployment overview.

The Daemons got the first turn and immediately began their push forward. The magic phase was lackluster, and the Soul Grinders limited shooting failed to achieve any results.

The Wood Elves jockeyed for position and slowly pushed their melee troops forward before unleashing their arrows. The toughness of the Nurgle forces was a problem for the Wood Elf archers and had a limited effect beyond putting a wound on the Rot Flies.

In what could have been a disaster for the Daemons the Great Unclean one miscast on a dispel with a calamitous detonation. Luckily no wounds made it through and it was an anticlimactic failure!

In the Demon turn the Rot Flies were out of an effective charge range, and with a Treeman in their flank if they failed they just flew right up to the Glade Riders who had retreated to the board edge.

The rest of the Demons swung the axis of their attack towards the center of the board, wheeling to get in position to avoid the large pillar some madmen attempted to build in the forest!

Looking for revenge from a previous game the Wild Riders charged the spell augmented Beasts of Nurgle!

On the far flank the Wood Elf Lord on Dragon, Great Eagle and Treeman all charged the small block of Demons. Things are not looking good for the smelly green guys!

In the shooting phase the unit of archers with poison boys put a wound on the Great Unclean One, but across the board they continued to have a difficult time wounding the foul creatures…

although the Glade Riders were able to put two wounds on the Rot Flies as they used their dressage skills to slide away from the foul fliers.

In the combat phase the Plaguebearer champion issued a challenge which the Wood Elf Lord and his faithful mount proudly took up. The champion was crushed to a pulp and gave max overkill to the Wood Elves, however there was a lackluster performance by the Treeman and Great Eagle. This coupled with a decent round of saves and enough wounds to kill the Great Eagle meant the Plague bearers actually won the combat!

This forced the Lord and Treeman back! The Dragon had to fly over the pillar and the Treeman just bumped up against it waiting for the Plague Bearers to attack!

Meanwhile the Wild Riders managed to beat the Beasts of Nurgle, but only just!

The Nurgle turn saw the daemons launch into combat across the board. The main block of Plague Bearers along with their Battle Standard Bearer charged the Wild Riders to relieve the Beasts of Nurgle.

The Plague Bearer unit charged the flank of the Treeman and were joined by the Rot Flies which decided they were of a better use in helping in the fight against the Treeman than they were in finally getting to grips with the cowering Glade Riders.

The Lord looks on helplessly as the Treeman is engaged on both sides.

Hey, look! I managed to get my Great Unclean One stuck behind the rest of the army again. How characteristic of me….

The daemons of rot managed to defeat the demon of wood forcing him to flee. The Rot Flies opted to pursue while the Plaguebearers were able to stop themselves from pursuing and turned to face the dragon once more.

The Great Unclean One was able to get an augment off with Total Power. I’m sure it will be totally useful with him behind his friends and all….

The daemons were able to finish off the remaining Wild Riders and prepared for the revenge of the Wardancers.

The overview of the board as the turn went to the Wood Elves.

In the Wood Elf turn the Lord and the Wardancers charged into the big unit of Plaguebearers. Somehow I don’t think this unit will get as lucky as the other unit. Despite having a Battle Standard Bearer on palanquin the Wardancers and their hero should prove deadlier than the Treeman and Great Eagle!

The archers continued to have a bad day failing to put even a single wound on the Nurglings that had spent the game inexorably moving towards them.

The mage cast Windblast killing one of the Beasts of Nurgle and pushing the survivor back an additional 2 inches. The Wood Elf mage also cast Tree singing causing a forest to grow in front of the Beasts of Nurgle, hoping to prevent the Beasts of Nurgle from joining the Plaguebearers in their combat next turn, if it should go that long.

The combat went poorly for the Plaguebearers and they fell back from the combined assault of the Wood Elves. but their opponents followed up.

In the Nurgle turn the surviving Plague Bearers charged into the flank of the Dragon in an attempt to turn the tide of the combat.

Well, that went poorly…. Many Plaguebearers were sent back to the warp!

The overview of the battlefield. Those Glade Guard on the flank better watch out, the Nurglings are getting close!

The Nurglings finally caught their quary and took a few wounds but killed more elves and won the combat!

The Soulgrinder was surrounded by the remaining missile armed troops and even with their massed fire only managed to put 1 wound on the portable artillery piece!

If you are wondering what happened here the Dragon and Wardancers killed the remaining Plaguebearers so quick I couldn’t even get a picture!

You can tell they were in a rush to get out of the charge range of the Great Unclean One! Off camera the Nurglings further engaged the archers and chased after the survivor crashing into the elven mage.

In the Nurgle turn the Great Unclean One turned around to face the Wardancers in case they decided to charge in on the last turn. The Great Unclean One attempted to cast the Summoning on the Wardancers but, like most everything else, it was dispelled, insultingly enough by the table roll!

The Lord couldn’t get into combat with anyone so he and his Dragon flew over and incinerated a few Plaguebearers.

The Nurglings beat the elven mage in combat and chased her down in a tide of snot and bile!

Knowing their odds were slim, but hoping to swing the tide of battle with a well placed killing blow the Wardancers charged the Great Unclean One. The Great Unclean One issued a challenge and the Shadow Dancer accepted. No 6’s to wound were rolled and so the Great Unclean One survived and stomped the offending hero to past winning the combat and running the remaining elves down.

With that the game was over in a victory to the Nurgle Daemons!

This was a fun game and the Wood Elves almost pulled the game out in the last turn. If the Shadow Dancer snuck a killing blow through on the Great Unclean One the game would have ended differently for sure!
