Battle Report: Warhammer The Old World – The Warriors of Chaos clash against the Knights of Bretonnia

With a few games of The Old World under my belt with my Dwarves I decided it was time to try an army with some maneuverability and to try my hand at actually casting some magic. With that in mind I pulled my Warriors of Chaos army box off the shelf and took it to meet my buddy and his Bretonnians! How did it go? Read on to find out!

The Bretonnian deployment.

The forces of Chaos deployed for battle! The warriors were armed with halberds and both units of Chaos Knights were equipped with lances. All three units were marked by Khorne. The BSB and Lord were also frenzied and equipped with a few magical trinkets. The Sorcerer marching with the smaller units of knights was a level 4. If I’m not playing Dwarves I’m going to try and actually cast some magic!

The overall view of the battlefield.

The SUPER exciting Chaos Warrior turn showed the army marching in echelon towards their foes. What else do you expect when all the

The Bretonnians first turn was a little more exciting with a sweep around the Chaos Warriors left flank developing. Even at long range with the assistance of their Prophetess they were able to kill two units of warhounds. So much for my frenzy screeners and first charge breakers….

A magical blast from my Sorcerer killed two knights of the realm. Magic! Huzzah!

Sadly for the Chaos Warriors the game really started to get interesting in the Bretonnians second turn. The Duke on Pegasus charged the large unit of chaos knights and the small unit of Kinghts of the Realm and the grail knights got off a combo charge on the Chaos Warriors.

To the surprise of no one the knight units decimated the Chaos Warriors and after running a whopping 4″ the Warriors were caught and cut down.

The Grail Knights ran past the large unit of Chaos Knights but the small unit impacted them at a charge! Meanwhile on the other flank the Chaos Lord played patty cake with the Duke forcing him to fall back in good order.

In the Chaos turn the Sorcerer was able to kill a single knight with an assailment spell, but the rest of his cohort was unimpressive and caused no casualties. Still, Chaos won and forced the knights to fall back in good order.

On the other flank the remaining unit of warhounds charged the Pegasus knights so the Chaos Chosen could charge the Duke again. Surprisingly the foul beasts only lost three models and fell back in good order! Again the Duke and the Chaos Lord just slapped each other around a bit.

If you’re thinking how could it get any worse for the forces of Chaos, it could with a combined charge of a unit of knights, Pegasus Knights, and the Duke charging into the Chaos Chosen Knights and their lord.

I didn’t lose as many knights as I would have expected but outnumbered they turned and fled getting run down by the cream of Bretonnian chivalry. Meanwhile the smaller unit of Chaos Chosen Knights finally found the sharp ends of their swords and killed two of the three remaining Knights. Don’t worry though, he managed to fall back in good order!

In what would be the last Chaos turn the Chaos Knights charged the remaining Knight. They didn’t kill him in combat but he finally had enough and fled getting run down in the process. Of course they ran over the blazing pillar and lost one of their number to the difficult terrain. With that we called the game. I had about as many points left on the field as I managed to kill all game. So looks like it’s back to the drawing board for me….

My opponent pointed out he had amazing rolls and mine were terrible which is true. He was well above average in everything but casting and dispelling (although he did dispel my much needed buffs on the turn the small unit of Chaos Knights was in combat!) His armor rolls were insane but having punished him with Dwarf armor rolls in the past my turn was definitely due! I need to come up with some armor penetration and actually read the army book. Chaos troops are not as strong as they used to be so I’ll be working on some characters instead of flinging some cheap items on them and hoping for the best.

This won’t be the last the forces of Bretonnia see of my Chaos Warriors!

If you have any combos you particularly enjoy let me know!
