Hey all! Another smaller month here with only three models. I promise I’ve been painting, but it has all been taudry 3rd and 4th edition stuff – nothing like these fine wines on display today!
Today we have three Tyranid Individuals – trusted by the Hive Fleet to work semi-autonomously for the good of the brood. Painting these guys was a blast. The 2e Tyranids take so well to contrast paints and I really like how bright the scheme is turning out on the larger models.
My hive tyrant army commander will double in 10th edition 40k games as a winged Tyranid prime. The wings are from the contemporary kit and the claws are from a 3rd edition ravener kit, but all in all I think they fit the 2nd edition aesthetic well. The wings are considered a “Toughened Exoskeleton” morphology for rules keeping purposes.
As always, it is such a treat to see everyone’s models. Month 5 is just around the corner – keep painting strong everyone!
Hive Tyrant – Army Commander with Toughened Exoskeleton – 174 pts.
Lictor – 96 pts.
Zoanthrope – 120 pts.
Total: 390 points
Wachtmeister: This is an impressive trilogy of big gribblies! I love how these have their own personalities but still fit in with the horde TJM has already painted. It may be heretical but I prefer a consistent color scheme throughout a Tyranid army as opposed to every unit a different color and TJM’s scheme is suitably alien looking.

Hello all,
This month was a month of characters ! i started with a chief librarian followed by a mighty Chaplin also knock out the Chaplin that will lead out the death company .
CL – 196pts
MC- 125 p.
C- 53pts
As aways can’t wait to see all the entry’s .
Wachtmeister: In the same vein as TJM George knocked out a trio of characters, albeit much smaller! Interestingly enough they are about the same total points cost! I love how the alien looking tufts bring color to the very dark scheme, the contrast is quite nice!

This month has been challenge for a number of reasons. In terms of painting, I have had eight Tyranid Gargoyles on my table. Anyone who has worked on them before will probably agree that they are a pain to construct and have some tiny details to get your paintbrush around. Having said that, I really enjoyed working on them. With the clock running down here in Australia, I also managed to get eight Spore Mines painted, enough for my two Biovores to have some fun the next time I use them. The models I have used were not around in 2nd Edition, but I love how they look like little sea creatures. They also have enough design features to fit my paint scheme, apart from the bright pink claws; they are too squidgy for that! Next month I will be working on the only character for my army, as well as another large bug from Armorcast.
16 models, 208 points.
Wachtmeister: I only had two blisters of the Gargoyles which I had planned on using for scenic base purposes and I took one look at them and realized I was never going to assemble them. My hat is well and truly off to M4cr0Dutch for not only assembling eight of the buggers but making them look so amazing! I’m glad he got the spore mines done, he deserved an assembly break this month for sure!

I got completely carried away with the titan this month and made some good progress there. Discovery of the month: Airbrush is the way to go. I haven’t used mine a lot so far, but I guess this is about to change. With the titan experience in mind I used the airbrush on the test Wraithguard, too, and this made it a lot easier to paint it in a decent amount of time. The deadline came as the usual surprise, so it’s only two models, the Wraithguard and another Ghost Warrior. Goal for next month will be the rest of the Wraithguard and finishing the titan body.
Wachtmeister: If you look close enough you can see the finished models at the feet of this giant “miniature.” Hans has made a great start of it and I can’t wait to see this titan painted up in all of it’s glory. One day I’ll learn how to use my airbrush confidently. It did make my life a lot easier painting my Baneblade for the 3rd edition of this challenge, I need to get back to work!

Belated Waaaagggghhhhh! After cashing in my mulligan last month, I aimed to come back strong with more additions for my growing Kult of Speed plus the classic Shokk Attack Gun! You can’t beat the kind of 2nd edition wackiness that is achieved by beaming crazed snotlings through 40k’s equivalent of a boom tube!.
A lot of blended warm colors dominated this month’s painting since both the wartrak and mek were both from the Evil Sunz clan. Combined with month two’s warbikes and month one’s warbuggy this season of the challenge will provide my army with a high speed hammer to smash into my imperial foes! Light vehicles can have a short life on the battlefields of 2nd edition but I’m hoping that having 8 speeding vehicles that can cross the board in less than 2 turns will overwhelm my enemies ability to stop them all. At least in theory; since in actuality Wachmeister will probably send one vehicle spinning out of control that will start a chain collision that will grind my mighty assault to a halt.
The snotling bases as ammo for the Shokk Attack Gun were a lot of fun to paint, and they are the first challenge entry for me where I have used an airbrush to paint my miniatures. I got a cheap airbrush a few months ago and while it doesn’t do magic tricks it does great with base coats and zenithal highlights. I used the airbrush to paint all three mob bases the same shades of green applied first as a basecoat and then in lighter highlight colors from a top down angle. After that I dry brushed the basing material with yellow-greens while getting the snotlings a variety of green tinted colors by using glazes over the green basecoats. Then I just had to paint the weapons and they were complete. The amount of time I saved combined with the colors I was able to achieve was really pleasing. Plus when you start at the cheap end of the tool scale you only can go up as you slowly replace those basic tools with better options over time.
Next month’s painting entails two large gretchen mobs to soak up enemy fire, along with a boar mounted Snake Bite boss to lead my Boar Boyz thundering into battle.
Even though I can’t wait to unleash my screaming Kult of Speed in the direction of his space marines, the reliable Wachtmeister deserves many thanks for corralling the many participants in this amazing challenge for the 5th (but his first) time. Good fortune to all the participants, an exciting mix of veterans of the long war and fresh inductees to the legion. Follow my painting adventures at 1stlegionchronicles.blogspot.com
Ragnak Gutzsmashah – Evil Sunz Mekaniak, Shokk Attack Gun 43 points
Rabidfang’s Stunties – Evil Sunz Snotlings, 3 x Snotling Bases 15 points
Da Ragewhacka – Evil Sunz Wartrak, Twin-Linked Heavy Bolters 50 points
Wachtmeister: Jon came back well rested from his mulligan month and it shows. His Ork army is really growing, I’m going to have to hope for some good sustained fire rolls and a multi bike pile up to stop him during our annual end of challenge game!

This month was a close run thing. This 3rd Edition Deathwing Master was an unexpected bonus model for me as I considered painting him in a future challenge but I decided it was now or never for painting him as I already had all the colors out! I know we say this a lot around here but I was surprised the details just kept popping up on it. I did notice I missed the bits attached to his head, I’ll have to go back and do something with them later. I’ll also need to add banners, find the Sergeants shield, and source some more Deathwing shoulder pad icons. I didn’t realize I only had two left in the size I need. They were from the 10th Edition Leviathan set so they shouldn’t be too hard to find. I just didn’t realize I only had two left in the size I need. Still, they are ready to search a derelict Space Hulk looking for any genestealers that might pop up!
Master of the Deathwing – 140 points

Mulligans and More

This month I’m gonna take my mulligan to relax. With 3 months left in the challenge (including this month) I only have 12 models remaining from my original pledge!
This month was filled with sewing and metalwork making modifications to my reenacting kit, so it was a pleasant hobby-filled month. The best kind of problem to have.
Wachtmeister: If anyone deserves a break it’s Pygmyhippo. Not only is he putting out massive quantities of high-quality miniatures he helped me get Wave 1 up in time this month with his webmaster mastery! I look forward to next month!

I’m looking forward to seeing what all the other entrants have been up to and hopefully when things are a bit more stable for me later in the year I can open this project up again and get some paint on minis. Thanks for taking the time to set this up, I’m just sorry I haven’t been able to do it justice.
Wachtmeister: Unfortunately, Ratlord needed to step away from the challenge. I hope he finds time to finish his force, it was shaping up really nicely. His all white helmeted Farseer was particularly cool!
That’s it for this month folks, be sure to stop in next month. Being month five it is possible some people will be finishing up, while others are making up for lost time!
