Say something about this months entry:
Running two challenges at the same time for February and March I was glad to have an extra day in February – only to find out that submissions werde due on the 25th. I started off in true style with a
change of plans and painted the Farseer first who was originally meant for the April contingent. I guess I just couldn’t resist his sad bunny eyes. I basically copied the routine Juan Hidalgo uses for his Wraithguard on Youtube and used some contrast paints as basecoat, pinwash and glaze for the first time. I actually liked this more than I thought and tried the same method for the Wraithlord, but I should have known better. With all the smooth surfaces and very little texture is was a patchy mess that took four or five coats of yellow to clean up. From there it was some edge highlighting and glazing, but it is suprising how little sharp edges there actually are on the model. Still one of my all time favourites and first one I ever painted. I still have to attach the back module in the next couple of days before my own personal March Madness begins with a full unit of Skaven for WHFB and another Wraithlord. If I manage to pull this off it will be much easier after that.

Wachtmeister: Look at those blues and yellows!  They are drop dead gorgeous.  I’m going to have to look up the video Onze is talking about, it sounds like a lot of work but man the results are worth it!  I do love the Farseers eyes, the slightly different blue has an off putting, ethereal look!

Say something about this months entry:

So for the inaugral month I picked out my warlock and warwalker as a good intro batch, given that I hadn’t painted anything in over a year I hoped that this would ease me into the project gently. While the warlock was a blessedly single-piece cast unfortunately I had forgotten just how much of a pain the metal warwalker/dreadnoughts were to assemble. Due to a combination of a busy month at work and plain old paint-scheme paralysis it took a while to get started with getting the paint on these two, but when I did finally start it was really a pleasure! I opted for a fairly standard combination of black and yellow with red as a spot colour for my Ulthwe force, although I did decide that I wanted to warlock to stand out a bit more hence the purple robe. I had hoped I might be able to use some of my many spare plastic heavy weapons to arm the warwalker and dreadnought, but alas when it came time to try them they just either looked comepletely wrong or didn’t fit. I guess that’s what I get for trying to afix the modern platics to this classic, so I’ll be sourcing some metals later down the line and the driver will just have to make do with kicking for now.

Wachtmeister: I didn’t realize it was paint a seer and a walker month here at the second edition challenge, but it looks like some of the Eldar players got the note!  Ulthwe with their black and yellow armor are not easy to paint, but Rat Lord did a terrific job.  I think the War Walker pilot needs to make some friends with the Eldar Quartermaster and quick though!

Waaaagggghhhhh! The power of my assembled ork horde grows with the submission of my first “slice” for the 5th season of the challenge.  I have really enjoyed all the games I have played with my ork army so far and I am excited to add a classic Ork War Buggy, Traktor Kannon, and Splatta Kannon to my warband.

The first month of the challenge last year gave me lots of practice painting checks on my Goff Boyz while this year the skill I honed was painting flames.  My daydreams of an Ork army always took a lot of inspiration from the back cover of WD 122 depicting a combined Ork warband with a lot of Evil Sunz elements.  Fulfilling those dreams and adding more units to my army from the Evil Sunz clan would mean I would need to paint the classic flame patterns that decorate many of their armor, badges, and vehicles.

After many brushstrokes I am happy with most of the flames I added to all three units this month, while also realizing I will need more practice to get this technique to match what I see in my mind.  Getting the shape and patterns of repeated wavy flames has proven much more challenging than the more easily mastered skill of painting checker patterns.  Fortunately I have Evil Sunz units planned for at least two future slices so I will get plenty more practice.

Leading this month’s slice, the War Buggy will give me fast moving anti-armor firepower in my growing kult of speed.  The Traktor Kannon and Splatta Kannon will provide me with some long range punch to meddle with my enemy’s advances in battle, albeit in a goofy manner which is proper Orky fashion.  I am stoked for my next opportunity to play so I can get these units on the table.

Thanks to the valiant Wachtmeister for stepping into the breach and coordinating this amazing challenge for the 5th (but his first) time and good fortune to all the participants, always an exciting mix of veterans of the long war and fresh inductees to the legion.  Follow my painting adventures at 1stlegionchronicles.blogspot.com

Evil Sunz War Buggy with 2 crew and Multi-Melta   65 points

Traktor Kannon and 2 crew                 40 points

Splatta Kannon and 2 crew                  60 points

Wachtmeister: I’m really impressed with how Jon has upped his painting game since we started these challenges.  Those flames are sweet!  Last game we played he fielded the weapons unpainted though, and my twelve year olds came down separately and both gave him a good natured ribbing.  They’ll be thrilled to see these things painted up!

It was going so well! Until it wasn’t….  First month’s in the bag, and it’s a story of what could have been.

I was able to batch paint the first combat squad slice up to final details and edge highlighting, but a bicep injury while I was being a weekend warrior put a line through the last week and a half of this month’s challenge. But hey, that’s why we have an extra month isn’t it?

I quite like how they are coming together so far, especially the bolters and flamer, and fingers crossed I’ll be back up to speed by the end of March!

Wachtmeister: Sometimes life gets in the way of a good time, and this month it looks like a good time got in the way of Peters good time!  Still, I see two Ultramarines that look to be table ready if they were both on their bases, and since one of them is table ready and based I’m using my powers of discretion to count this month as a win.  I have faith in you Peter!

Completed:

Cypher (112), Master Crafted Bolt Pistol (10), Master Crafted Plasma Pistol (15), C’tan Phase Knife (10)  65

Icon Bearer (55), Power Fist (10)

Total 212 PTS – 21% of challenge complete

It’s not been the easiest start, with various life things (work, family bugs etc) but I made it. Cypher and his icon bearer. After some deliberation I have gone for a mostly black, red, gun metal and cream with the odd spot of green. I’m happy with the robes which I kind of stippled up from a base coat of tallarn sand to wraith bone white.

Something funny about Cypher… I thought he was 2nd edition miniature! But no, he was 3rd ed. Released in white dwarf 231, he was sculpted by Dave Andrews, who also sculpted the 2nd edition Chaos Dreadnought and the 3rd edition plastic Bezerkers that I’m building. He also sculpted a fair amount of other stuff for chaos if you look through the old catalogues. Some of those models are true classics, so I feel fits with the period.

Next month I think it might have to be the Fallen Angel Veteran squad.

Wachtmeister: Vectis’ entry got lost in the warp for a period of time, I’m glad it made the way to me.  If it wasn’t for this fault in the Astronomicom he would have had one of the earliest entries!  I love these two models, they have so much character.  So much of 3rd edition had a 2nd edition feel and these guys are no exception!

Sorry I’m late, life just got in the way this month and had very little hobby time. So here is as far as I got. Flesh tearer Techmarine.  Hope everybody else managed to get there’s done and can’t wait to see them!

Wachtmeister: George didn’t get his entry finished this month, but I really appreciate him sending in what he got done.  Looks like he’s just a base away from getting him table ready.  I love the color scheme, and I really like the 2nd Edition servo arm he attached to the Rogue Trader mini.  Keep on keeping on George, we will see you next month!

A few of our challengers were surprised the challenge entries are due on the 25th of each month, me included!  Jon told me he couldn’t make our regular painting night because he couldn’t lose the 30 minutes driving to my house.  I had just cut and pasted the rules from the first challenge, which I forgot had the earlier due date.  Oops!  Fortunately, I was able to get my Captain to tabletop standard in the nick of time.  The next day I added some additional basing material, a decal for the cloak and some highlighting.  I could have just included that version in this post but I have to maintain my journalistic integrity!

Dark Angel Master w/ power sword – 115 points – 1 model

Wachtmeister: Viden posted some cool stuff on our Facebook group but didn’t quite finish in time.  I hope he recovers and comes back strong next month!

Not only do I hope Viden makes it back next month, but I hope you all come check us out again next month too!
