40k2ndAC, Mk V Challengers – Wave 2

This group is the second half of our starting entries to the challenge!

Participants who have successfully completed a previous challenge have a purity seal next to their name. Those rare veterans who have successfully completed every challenge bear the coveted crux terminatus. Lets give a warm welcome to these intrepid souls!

I am overjoyed to be in the challenge once again. I have been in the last two challenges and failed in the last one, so I hoped to have a chance to redeem myself and I was downcast once I knew what happened to our good old Dr. Viking. This time I come with a bunch of space nuns with guns led by a fiery confessor. These models have been around for years and I have wanted to paint them several times, but something always came up that prevented me from doing so. And they would fit greatly with my Imperial Guard force and the religious theme.

So, here is the army list (following a WYSIWYG philosophy):

  • Redemptor Kyrinov with Master-Crafted Bolt Pistol, Mace of Valaan, Icon of Chiros, Rosarius and Litanies of Faith – 129 points.
  • Battle Sisters Squad with Heavy Bolter, Meltagun and a Veteran Sister with Bolt Pistol and Power Sword – 225 points.
  • Battle Sisters Squad with Heavy Flamer, Flamer and a Veteran Sister with Hand Flamer and Power Sword – 241 points.
  • Seraphim Squad with one sister with two hand flamers and a Veteran Sister with Plasma Pistol and Power Sword – 204 points.
  • Seraphim Squad with one sister with two hand flamers and a Veteran Sister with Plasma Pistol and Bolt Pistol – 200 points.

Total: 999 points.

As per now, I plan to divide the list in five slices corresponding with the five units of the list, with bonuses if things go well, perhaps splitting some units if life gets too much in the way (I hope not!)

Hey all! TJM here, back again for my second Cowabunga 40k 2nd Edition Army Challenge! I was fortunate to complete last year’s challenge, painting over 2000 points of 2nd Edition Eldar. A big thank you to Wachtmeister for taking on Dr. The Viking’s flame and keeping the torch alive in 2024! The community and talent surrounding this challenge has been an inspiration to witness and a privilege to be a part of.

This year I hope to complete about 1600 points of 2nd Edition Tyranids (1599 to be exact!). It has been a labor of love to gather up these models. I had initially started painting them two years ago in a Kraken-esque red/tan scheme but was ultimately unhappy with how the look turned out en-masse the table. Earlier this year, I found a new scheme which is not only looked better, but was a lot more fun to paint! We’re going green, baby!

In addition to getting this army painted up, my goal is to make a usable, 2nd Edition army for my FLGS’s 10th Edition crusade group. I love the look of 2nd edition / Rogue Trader models but have no one in the area to use them with – thus, in addition to making a valid 2nd edition army for my solo games, I need this army to multipurpose into a valid 10th edition one as well. Functionally, this means my Hive Tyrant lives a double-life as a 10th Edition Winged Prime – please don’t hate me! I had been working with a variety of 2nd edition wings, but the new 10th edition plastic wings fit the model so well I just had to cave and throw them on to represent the Tyrant’s “Toughened Exoskeleton enhancement.” I also happened to have some third edition claws lying around which fit the aesthetic – and model size – better than anything else in my bits box, bridging the style gap between the 2nd edition body and 10th edition wings. With that caveat aside, everything else is authentic, 1980/90s metal, plastic and resin!

The list:

Hive Fleet Ninja Turtles – 2nd Edition!

Support:

2 Screamer Killers – 398 pts.

Ripper Swarm – No cost

Exocrine – 165 pts.

Malefactor – 80 pts.

Individuals:

Hive Tyrant – Army Commander with Toughened Exoskeleton – 174 pts.

Lictor – 96 pts.

Zoanthrope – 120 pts.

Broods:

10x Gargoyle Brood – 160 pts.

10x Gargoyle Brood – 160 pts.

20x Termagant Brood – 120 pts.

20x Termagant Brood w/ 6 spike rifles – 126 pts.

Total: 1599 points, 48 models

Month Breakdown:

Month 01: 40 Termagants: 246 points

Month 02: Screamer Killers: 398 points

Month 03: 20 Gargoyles: 320 points

Month 04: Hive Tyrant, Lictor, Zoanthrope: 390 points

Month 05: Malefactor and Exocrine: 245 points

Month 06: Mulligan/ Bonus Models (There’s a horde of hormagants, genestealers and warriors that need painting too!)

Best of luck to everyone! It will be great to see what we all complete over the next few months!

I’ve been looking to join a community challenge like this for some time and I just missed out on last years challenge, but still wanting to do challenge I did it by myself!. In the end I painted up Blood Angels Army in about 12 months. As a working family man I have limited hobby time, but luckily I can pick up a brush most nights for at least 10 minutes and it really does all add up.

As my last project was the good guys and although there is always more to add… I’ve decided to go for The Fallen Angels (Chaos) which is probably my all time favourite codex. I picked up my original version just at the sunset of second edition in GW Pool UK I think – it still has the price on the cover £2!! which must have been a Sale to shift all the 2nd ed stuff.

The Army will be based around Cypher and the Fallen Angels supported by a crazed warband of Khorne Bezerkers.

Now… This is not 100% codex compliant! As I should have a warlord. Luckly l started a small warband of Chaos a few years back so they will also for part of the final Army (I’ll get them in one of the completed shots). So here is the list:

147 – Cypher (112), Master Crafted Bolt Pistol (10), Master Crafted Plasma Pistol (15), C’tan Phase Knife (10)

189 – Fallen Angels Veterans (5×35), Bolt Guns (4×3), Chainsword (2)

205 – Khorne Bezerkers (5×35), Plasma Pistols (2×5), Chain Axe/Sword (6×2). Power Fist (10)

190 – Dreadnought (135), Twinlinked Autocannon (35), Power Claw (15), Frag Grenades (5)

65 – Icon Bearer (55), Power Fist (10)

202 – Terminators (3×51), Reaper Autocannon (25), Chain Fist (10) , Power fist (8), Combi Meltagun (6)

Total 998

I will start with the Icon Bearer and Cypher as the central models and to set up the colour palette for the rest of the army! Which is about 200 points worth for the first month

So, back in the heady days of the mid-90s I began collecting an Ulthwe Eldar army. I had already started playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle, but after having spent the Summer holiday endlessly flicking through the rulebooks for my friends copy of Warhammer 40,000 I was instantly drawn to the sleek lines and aesthetics of the Eldar (it probably helped that I liked elves too). Over the next few years I slowly collected a moderately impressive army to do battle against my friend’s Orks and Chaos Space Marines. Hoever, unfortunately, with the passage of time (along with moving city for University) this army was lost to the winds.

Over the last several years I have slowly been gathering models from those days gone by, a couple of guardians here, some warmachines there. With this 5th Second Edition Challenge starting up it seemed like the perfect opportunity to break myself out of the painting doldrums and get a managable force ready for the table.

Eldar 2nd edition army challenge – 998pts

Characters
Farseer – witchblade
Warlock – force rod
Exarch – Dark Reaper helm with shuriken cannon

Squads
8 Guardians – 7x shuriken catapults, 1x flamer, 1x shuriken pistol
3 Dark Reapers

Support
War Walker – heavy plasma cannon, scatter laser
Dreadnought – missile launcher

I’ve always been more of a WHFB guy, but there are two or three armies in 40k that I fell in love with on first sight. I’ve collected quite a few 40k miniatures over the years but painted mostly Fantasy, Mordheim and Blood Bowl. It’s about time to change that.

One of my all time favorites is the Eldar Craftworld of Iyanden. I love the idea of a fallen Craftworld civilization, Jes Goodwin’s great sculpts for Wraithguard, Dreadnoughts, Farseers and Warlocks, and of course the classic color scheme with contrasting yellow and blue. 1000 pts. of Iyanden troops seems a manageable amount, and some colorful 40k models will be a change from what I ususally paint. I have some more Warlocks, Dreadnoughts and some Aspect Warriors if there is still time.

The army list is pretty simple with one character, three squad and two support selections:

1 Farseer – 170

5 Wraithguard – 175

5 Wraithguard – 175

5 Wraithguard – 175

1 Dreadnought – 160
additional weapon – 45

1 Dreadnought – 160
additional weapon – 45

Total: 1105

I’d go with two small slices for february and march, as I will have some Skaven left to paint for the Call of the Crown Challenge, but after that, I ready to go all-out on Eldar and I am confident that I will be able to get some more models painted.

February 1 Dreadnought
March 1 Dreadnought
April 5 Wraithguard, 1 Farseer
May 5 Wraithguard
June 5 Wraithguard
July tbd

This year I’m going to be doing something a bit different and out the box for me. I’ll be using the Angles of Death codex to giving you my take on a small war band of Flesh tearers! As always I try and use models I own all ready have and this year I’ve managed to do just that !

As you can see a 1000 points doesn’t get you far and if I’m honest this suits me to the ground this time round. As a vet of these challenges and not missing any round I can tell you it can be a slog!

Can’t wait to see everyone progress !

Good luck everyone.

I am honored to have been entrusted with running the 5th installment of the venerable 40k 2nd Edition Army Challenge. After breaking the curse of the Space Wolves last year I had planned on returning to my beloved Imperial Guard. That was of course until common sense got the better of me when I figured out how much work running this challenge was going to be while trying to get through my last semester of my Masters program, work, kids activities and so on. Going through my bin of miniatures I decided I should paint the minis I’ve owned longer than any other 40k miniature, my Dark Angels.

The unpainted Space Marine in the tactical squad is standing in for the original marine which I hope will turn back up. Of the terminators the four that are painted, and the sergeant, are from my original collection. When I was a kid I bought one of each available model and didn’t realize that wasn’t how a squad was equipped. I bought a regular Deathwing terminator from a friend, and another happened to have a Cyclone Missile Launcher equipped terminator so I figured I’d buy him as well. Painting up the extra heavy weapons allows me some options and gets me to 1,000 points, so it is a win-win! The minis with paint went straight from the photoshoot to a Simple Green bath. I think the Deathwing were painted with enamel paints so they’ll probably need a bath in something other than Simple Green but I guess I’ll find out in a few days!

I look forward to all the progress our stalwart veterans and green troops make over the next six months!

Dark Angels Master with power sword 121 points

Tactical Squad with power sword, lascannon, meltagun 359 points

Deathwing Squad (8 terminators, 2 assault cannons, heavy flamer, cyclone missile launcher, 2 chainfists 608 points
